On Cloud Nine: January Thaw Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Gray: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is flanked by the results of the Light Blue 3″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’s also the center of this quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/4″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 4 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Light Blue 5 1/4″ squares & the White 5 1/4″ square. Which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Gray 3 1/2″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Light Blue: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Purple 5 1/4″ square & the White 5 1/4″ square. Which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Gray 2 3/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Light Blue 5 1/4″ squares & the Purple 5 1/4″ square. Which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Tan: Cut THREE (3) 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Tan: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the White 7 1/4″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut THREE (3) 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ strips. (These are paired with the Tan 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Tan
    7 1/4″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

(Ed. Note: There are a number of different colors in this quilt block. You can use the same ones that you see here or use your own & make it a scrappy quilt block. Up to you!)

  • Light Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are flanked on TWO (2) sides by the results of the Lavender 3 1/4″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Fuchsia 3 1/4″ squares & on ONE (1) other side by the Mint Green 2 1/2″ squares.)
  • Turquoise: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked on ONE (1) side by the Purple
    2 1/2″ squares & on ONE (1) other side by the Mint Green 2 1/2″ squares.)
  • Mint Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked on ONE (1) side by the Turquoise 2 1/2″ squares & on ONE (1) other side by the Yellow 2 1/2″ squares.)
  • Fuchsia: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Fuchsia: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 3″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Lavender: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the Light Pink 2″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 2 1/2″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Square in a Square’s for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This will be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked by either the results of the Pink
    3 1/4″ squares or the Lavender 3 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Square’s, for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Fuchsia 3″ squares to create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank either the results of the Fuchsia 3 1/4″ squares, or the Pink 3 1/4″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
