What a Feeling to Pay it Forward from a Simple Goal!

Quilt Therapy Posted on January 8, 2015 by TK HarrisonJanuary 5, 2015

I really do not like to call attention to myself for sharing the talents and gifts I have been gifted with and then paying it forward with donations.  I believe we are to give without calling attention to ourselves.  But a goal was reached this year, despite everything, and I am extremely happy that I was able to do what I set out to do.  My goal was to make a quilt top a month for our church’s Lutheran World Relief quilt efforts.  I didn’t do it alone.  Far from it.  My secret special person, who has sent me $20 a month since I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease four years ago, played a part in this goal.  I used most of those funds from 2014 to purchase fabric with.  My foster mother played a part in this goal.  She visited our house in November and she pieced three of the quilt tops for me.  My family played a part in this goal.  They allowed me the time to cut and sew these quilt tops together.  And with every single quilt top I pieced, I prayed for whomever and whatever was on my mind – it is always my special time to reach out to God with each stitch I made.

A goal was reached.  By me.  In the four years since my diagnosis, I have not been able to make a goal and fulfill it.  Too many distractions, too many doctor’s appointments, too many extracurricular activities, too many painful days – all of that adds up to not enough time, energy or gumption for me to deal with any goals I may have had.

One goal down, hopefully many more to follow.

Don’t Use it, Don’t Need It – Gift it to Someone Who Will Use It!

Quilt Therapy Posted on June 4, 2014 by TK HarrisonJune 2, 2014

I was searching for some fabric on my overflowing fabric stash shelves and came across these two small samples I had made some time in the past.  I believe it was when I first received my AccuQuilt studio cutter and I wanted to play with the shapes of the dyes.

I emailed the lady in charge of our quilt group at our church, attaching these two photos, and asked her if she had any use for them.  I knew the ladies made larger quilts for their Lutheran World Relief projects as well as giving quilts to graduates…but wasn’t sure of who else they made quilts for and if they had any need for these 40 1/2″ squares.

Wouldn’t you know, she said absolutely – and anything else I came up with in my searching, regardless of whether it was the sizes of the above pieces or just single blocks.  And then I hung my head in shame…knowing that now I would feel compelled to go through those shelves to find more.

But, I did it…at least as far as I could  get it done as I couldn’t reach all of my shelves (oh yeah is the day that I am able to get into my quilt studio and be able to access whatever I needed, whenever I needed it)!

I came up with nearly a full paper sack of this-n-that to give to the quilters.  And when I went to pick up the kids from Sunday school on Sunday morning, I saw the quilt-lady-in-charge carrying that bag to her car.  Guess she wanted to see what I sent before sharing it with the rest of the ladies!

And as an added bonus, most of my shelves are now cleared of items I would not use again so when my studio is complete, I won’t have as much to cull as I would if I hadn’t found these first two samples!

Fulfilling my 2014 Goals…One Project at a Time

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 7, 2014 by TK HarrisonApril 6, 2014

I wrote about my 2014 charity quilt goals here.  I have now made three quilts for our church’s support of the Lutheran World Relief.  I should have 12 of them done by the time the quilt ladies at church set aside two weeks at the beginning of each February to make and finish their quilts.  Thus far, these three are what I have made:

LWR Quilt #1 for February 2014

LWR-2

LWR Quilt #2 for March 2014

LWR Quilt #3 for April 2014

Took the bull by the horns this month and got one of my three charity quilts completed…instead of waiting until the last minute as I did in March <blush>.  Happy as a quilt bug in a quilted rug!

Quilted Lovies!

Quilt Therapy Posted on March 19, 2014 by TK HarrisonMarch 17, 2014

Have no fear, my Quilted Lovies are HERE!

I made a vow, at the beginning of February 2014, that I would make three charity quilt projects a month.  One will be a quilt for my church’s Lutheran World Relief ongoing quilt donations, one will be for Military Veteran’s and one will be a Quilted Lovie.  Thus far, February is in the bag and I am working on fitting my March charity quilt projects into my schedule.

The two images below are the results of my February and March Quilted Lovie goal:

Are YOU making and gifting any Quilted Lovies?  There are a number of free patterns on the Quilted Lovies website – so, get busy and please share your Quilted Lovie photos with me!

Quilting for Charity: Lutheran World Relief

Quilt Therapy Posted on March 6, 2014 by TK HarrisonMarch 2, 2014

For the past few years, I have donated fabric from my own stash as well as from others, to our quilt ladies at our home church, for their Lutheran World Relief (LWR) quilt-a-thon that happens each February.  The results of those ladies and their quilts completed is absolutely amazing!

That being said, I decided that if I feel good enough, I will make one LWR quilt a month.  My personal goal is to make one LWR quilt, one Military Veteran’s quilt and one Quilted Lovie each month – interspersed with whatever other quilts I am working on.  This is my February LWR quilt:
