Chisholm Star Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. (These are paired with the Red/White Half-Square Triangles to create the center of this quilt block.)
- Red: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. (This is paired with the White 3 7/8″ square which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. They’re paired with the Blue 3 1/2″ squares to create the center of this quilt block.)
- Red: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- Red: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is paired with the Red 3 7/8″ square which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. They’re paired with the Blue 3 1/2″ squares to create the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Red 3 7/8″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

If you sew TWELVE (12) “Chisholm Star Quilt Blocks” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Red: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (This is paired with the Blue 3 7/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block. In addition, they’ll be flanked by the results of the White 3 7/8″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
- Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (This is paired with the Red 3 7/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block. - White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Quarter-Square Triangle in the center of this quilt block, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, they’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
