Star Gardner Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ squares. (FOUR (4) of these will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block. The remaining FOUR (4) of these will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 3″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut EIGHT (8) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Blue
5 1/4″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Star Gardner Quilt Blocks,” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
Star Gardner Variation Quilt Block

- Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Purple: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 3 1/2″ square, creating ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
- Purple: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is flanked by the results of the Pink 3″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 3″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut EIGHT (8) 3″ squares. Then cut each square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Purple 5 1/4″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
