Quilted Kitchen: Monastery Quilt Block & Monastery Soup Recipe

Monastery Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Monastery Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the Green 4 3/4″ squares which will create TWO (2) Square in a Squares. ONE (1) will be the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block. The other ONE (1) will be the lower right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the White 4 3/4″ squares, which will partially create TWO (2) Square in a Squares, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 4 3/4″ squares. (These are flanked by the results of the Yellow 3 7/8″ squares which will create TWO (2) Square in a Squares. ONE (1) will be the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block. The other ONE (1) will be the lower right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the White
    4 3/4″ squares, which will partially create TWO (2) Square in a Squares, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 3/4″ squares. (These are flanked by the results of the White 3 7/8″ squares. They’re also flanked by the results of the Green 3 7/8″ squares. All together they’ll create TWO (2) Square in a Squares. They’ll also be the upper right-hand corner & the lower left-hand corner of this quilt block.)

Trails Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (ONE (1) of these is the lower left-hand corner of this quilt block. Another ONE (1) is the upper right-hand corner of this quilt block. The remaining TWO (2) of these are paired with the Brown 3 1/2″ triangles, which will create ONE (1) Four-Patch, which is the center of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • Brown: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (ONE (1) of these is the lower right-hand corner of this quilt block. Another ONE (1) is the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block. The remaining TWO (2) of these are paired with the Yellow 3 1/2″ triangles, which will create ONE (1) Four-Patch, which is the center of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • Orange: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the White 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These resulting triangles will flank the resulting triangles of the Orange 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 6 7/8″ rectangle. (This is paired with a White 3 1/2″ square, which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Dk. Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. (This is paired with the White 3 7/8″ square, which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. There’s only ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles in this quilt block.)
  • Dk. Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 9 7/8″ rectangle. (This is paired with a White 3 1/2″ square, which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 6 7/8″ rectangle. (This is paired with a White 3 1/2″ square, which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 9 7/8″ rectangle. (This is paired with a White 3 1/2″ square, which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 12 3/8″ rectangle. (This is paired with a White 3 1/2″ square, which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is paired with the Dk. Green 3 7/8″ square, which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. There’s only ONE (1) of these Half-Square Triangles in this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is paired with the Yellow 3 1/2″ x 6 7/8″ rectangle, which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is paired with the Dk. Green 3 1/2″ x 9 7/8″ rectangle, which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Orange: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the upper left-hand & the lower right-hand corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the Red/White Half-Square Triangles. They’re also paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares. All together they’ll create TWO (2) Four-Patches as needed to sew it together.)
  • Orange: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ square. (These are the lower left-hand & the upper right-hand corners of this quilt block. These are paired with the White 4 7/8″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew it together.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’re paired with the Orange 2 1/2″ squares. They’re also paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares. All together they’ll create TWO (2) Four-Patches as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares which will create ONE (1) Four-Patch. Together they’ll be the center of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 7/8″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares, which will create EIGHT (8) Snowball Corners, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 2 1/2″ squares which will create ONE (1) Four-Patch. Together they’ll be the center of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Cyan Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Blue/White Half-Square Triangles. They’ll create a “frame” around the Blue 4 3/4″ in the square center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’re then paired with the Cyan Blue 2 3/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. Which will create a “frame” around the Blue 4 3/4″ square in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 4 3/4″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s “framed” by the Cyan Blue 2 3/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. As well as the Blue/White Half-Square Triangles. All are needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 3 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’re then paired with the Cyan Blue 2 3/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. Which will create a “frame” around the Blue 4 3/4″ square in the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Purple/White Half-Square Triangles in the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
