Fancy Star Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank the Green 3 3/8″ square in the center of this quilt block. Which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/8″ squares. (These squares are flanked by the results of the Green
    3 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Yellow 3 1/4″ square. Which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the Yellow 3 3/8″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares.)
  • Teal: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • Teal: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • Teal: Cut FOUR (4) 3 3/8″ squares. (These squares are paired with the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares. They’re also paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the Teal 3 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. They’re paired with the Teal 3 3/8″ squares.)

  • Peach: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. (This square is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the Blue 3 1/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the results of the Blue 3 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These squares are the lower left-hand & the upper right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the White
    2 1/2″ squares in the upper left-hand & lower right-hand corners of this quilt block. They’re also paired with the Purple/White Flying Geese as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

The best way to sew this quilt block together is on the diagonal. Sew all of the Flying Geese & Square in a Square elements together first. Then sew either ONE of the center strips together (from one end to another). Next sew the TWO (2) remaining corners together. Finally sew the TWO (2) remaining corners to the center strip!

American Star Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 1 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the Red 2″ squares. It’s also paired with the White 1 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Offset Nine-Patch. Once they’re sewn together they’ll be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the Red 1 1/2″ square in the center of this quilt block. They’re also paired with the White 1 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Offset Nine-Patch. Once they’re sewn together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 5/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
