Star Power: Maple Star Quilt Block & Maple Star Variation Quilt Block

Maple Star Quilt Block Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Maple Star Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are flanked on TWO (2) ends by the Brown 2 1/2″ squares, which will create a “frame” around the Brown 4 1/2″ square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These will flank on TWO (2) ends the Yellow 2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles, which will create a “frame” around the Brown 4 1/2″ square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked, on all FOUR (4) sides, by the Yellow  2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. It’s also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, which will create the FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Brown 2 1/2″ squares on ONE (1) side & the White 2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles on ONE (1) other side. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the Brown 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Maple Star Quilt Blocks,” you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

Maple Star Variation Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Gray: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares & the White 2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 2 1/2″ squares & the White 2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These will be used as the FOUR (4) corners as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Gray
    2 7/8″ squares. which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Green
    2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Tan: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. On the back side of the square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is paired with the Blue 4 1/2″ square which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. You only need ONE (1) Half-Square Triangle for this quilt block.)
  • Tan: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Tan 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Tan: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Tan 2 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangles, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is paired with the Tan 4 1/2″ square which will create TWO (2) Half-Square Triangles. You only need ONE (1) Half-Square Triangle for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (TWO (2) of these will flank the results of the Tan 4 1/2″ square & the other TWO (2) will flank the results of the Tan 2 7/8″ squares. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 9 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This is flanked on both sides, by the results of the White 6 7/8″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 6 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)

  • Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the White 4 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are paired on TWO (2) sides with the White 2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles & on TWO (2) other sides they’re paired with the 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Yellow 4 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Blue 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block)
