Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Orange: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 5/8″ squares which will create the center of this quilt block. They will also be flanked by the results of the White 7″ squares, which will create a Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Orange 2 5/8″ squares which will create the center of this quilt block. They will also be flanked by the results of the White 7″ squares, which will create a Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 7″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Orange 2 5/8″ squares & the White 2 5/8″ squares. Which will create a Square in a Square. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Coffin Star Quilt Blocks,” you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

Coffin Star Variation Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut SIX (6) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 5/8″ squares, which will create a “frame” around the center “Pinwheel Star” portion, of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the center of this quilt block & will create the “Pinwheel Star” portion of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SIX (6) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 2 5/8″ squares, which will create a “frame” around the center “Pinwheel Star” portion, of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 3 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the center of this quilt block & will create the “Pinwheel Star” portion of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 7″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Orange 2 5/8″ squares & the White 2 5/8″ squares. Which will create a Square in a Square. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. (These are paired with the White 5″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Fuchsia: Cut TEN (10) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares, which will create FIVE (5) Four-Patch sections. FOUR (4) of these Four-Patch sections will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block. The ONE (1) leftover will be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. (These are paired with the Blue 5″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TEN (10) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Fuchsia 2 1/2″ squares, which will create FIVE (5) Four-Patch sections. FOUR (4) of these Four-Patch sections will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block. The ONE (1) leftover will be the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangle. (This is paired with the TWO (2) Blue 3 1/2″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corner’s for this quilt block. This will also create the bottom of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 3 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangle, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corner’s for this quilt block. This will create the bottom of this quilt block.)
  • Light Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These will be the left & right sides of this quilt block.)
  • Light Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangle. (This will be the top of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Light Blue 4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
