Countdown to Christmas 12/13/2020: Log Cabin Quilt Block

Log Cabin Quilt Block Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Log Cabin Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Tan: Cut ONE (1) 1 1/2″ square. (This is flanked on ONE (1) side by the White 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle & on ONE (1) other side by the White 1 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangle. It’s the “chimney” on top of the “Log Cabin” house & is found in the top row of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This triangle’s flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Green 6 1/4″ square & on ONE (1) other side by the Blue 3″ x 7 1/2″ rectangle. This triangle’s part of the “roof” of the “Log Cabin” house.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3″ x 7 1/2″ rectangle. (This is flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Blue 3 3/8″ square. This rectangle’s part of the “roof” of the “Log Cabin” house.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This triangle will be flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the White 3 3/8″ square & on the other side by the results of the Blue 3 3/8″ square. This is the “gable” on the “roof” of the “Log Cabin” house.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 1 1/2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle. (This is flanked by the Tan 2″ square & is the left-hand corner of the top row of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 1 1/2″ x 8 1/2″ rectangle. (This is flanked by the Tan 2″ square & is the right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle. (This is paired with the Gray 3 1/2″ x 8″ rectangle. And it’s flanked on ONE (1) side by the Gray 3 1/2″ x 8″ rectangle & on ONE (1) other side it’s flanked by the Gray 5″ x 8″ rectangle. It’s the “window” of the “Log Cabin” house.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2″ x 8″ rectangle. (This is flanked on ONE (1) side by the Gray 2″ x 8″ rectangle & on ONE (1) other side it’s flanked by the Gray 3 1/2″ x 8″ rectangle. It’s the “door” to the “Log Cabin” house.)
  • Gray: Cut ONE (1) 2″ x 5″ rectangle. (This is paired with the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle. And it’s flanked on ONE (1) side by the Gray 3 1/2″ x 8″ rectangle & on ONE (1) other side it’s flanked by the Gray 5″ x 8″ rectangle. It’s the part of the “Log Cabin” house that’s under the “window”.)
  • Gray: Cut ONE (1) 2″ x 8″ rectangle. (This is flanked by the White 2″ x 8″ rectangle. It’s also the left-hand side of the “Log Cabin” quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 8″ rectangle. (This is flanked on ONE (1) side by the White 2″ x 8″ rectangle. On ONE (1) other side it’s flanked by the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle & the Gray 2″ x 5″ rectangle. It’s part of the “Log Cabin” house.)
  • Gray: Cut ONE (1) 5″ x 8″ rectangle. (This is flanked on ONE (1) side by the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle & the Gray 2″ x 5″ rectangle. It’s also the right-hand side of the “Log Cabin” quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut ONE (1) 1 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangle. (This is below the “roof” of the “Log Cabin” & above the “Log Cabin” itself.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Dk. Green: Cut SEVEN (7) 3 1/4″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create FOURTEEN (14) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these squares for this quilt block. (This triangle will flank the results of the Green 3 1/4″ squares & the White 7″ squares. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (This is paired with the Green 2 1/2″ x 4 5/8″ rectangle which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner. It’ll also be the lower left-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are flanked by the results of the Dk. Green 3 1/4″ squares. ONE (1) of these will be the upper right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SEVEN (7) 3 1/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Dk. Green 3 1/4″ squares, which will create FOURTEEN (14) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These are paired with the Green 2 1/2″ x 4 5/8″ rectangle as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is flanked by the results of the White 4 1/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Snowball Corner. It’s also the center of this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2 5/8″ squares. (These will flank the White 2 5/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. They’ll also help create a “frame” around the center Square in a Square of this quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These will flank the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares on TWO (2) sides & will flank the Med. Gray 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles on ONE (1) other side. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • Med. Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 5/8″ squares on ONE (1) end, then they’ll be flanked by the Gray 2″ squares & then they’ll flank the Dk. Gray 2″ x 5″ rectangles. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • Dk. Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 5″ rectangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 5/8″ squares on ONE (1) end & by the Med. Gray 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles on ONE (1) side. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Lt. Gray 2 5/8″ squares & the White 2 5/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 5/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. (These are flanked by the Lt. Gray 2 5/8″ squares & together they help create a “frame” around the center Square in a Square for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Red 3 1/2″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut TEN (10) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create TWENTY (20) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 2″ square. (This is the upper right-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 2″ x 5″ rectangle. (This is flanked on TWO (2) sides by the results of the Green 2 3/8″ squares. It’s also flanked one ONE (1) other side by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares & on the last side by the Green 2″ x 8″ rectangle. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 2″ x 8″ rectangle. (This is flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Green 2 3/8″ squares & on ONE (1) other side it’ll be flanked by the results of the White 6 7/8″ square. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 2″ x 9″ rectangle. (This is flanked on THREE (3) sides by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares & on ONE (1) other side it’s flanked by the Green 2 3/8″ squares + the 2″ x 5″ rectangle. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut TWO (2) 2 5/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Brown 2 5/8″ x 9″ rectangle, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 2 5/8″ x 9″ rectangle. (These are paired with the Brown 2 5/8″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TEN (10) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 2 3/8″ squares, which will create TWENTY (20) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Aqua: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut ONE (1) 4 3/4″ square. (This is flanked by the results of the Blue 3 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Aqua 4 3/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the Aqua 2 3/8″ squares. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ square as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Blue 3 7/8″ squares, which will create the second Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
