Star Power: American Star Quilt Block & American Star Variation Quilt Block

American Star Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

American Star Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 1 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the Red 2″ squares. It’s also paired with the White 1 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Offset Nine-Patch. Once they’re sewn together they’ll be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the Red 1 1/2″ square in the center of this quilt block. They’re also paired with the White 1 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Offset Nine-Patch. Once they’re sewn together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 5/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Red: Cut TWELVE (12) 2 5/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the Red/White Quarter-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)’
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Blue 1 1/2″ square. They’re also paired with the Blue 2″ squares. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Offset Nine-Patch. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Blue 2 5/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut TWELVE (12) 2 5/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the results of the Red 2 5/8″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. These are flanked by the results of the Blue
    2 5/8″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

American Star Variation Quilt Block

  • Blue: Cut SIX (6) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 5/8″ squares, which will create TWELVE (12) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 5/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the Blue/White Half-Square Triangles as needed to sew this quilt block together.)’
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Red 1 1/2″ square. They’re also paired with the Red 2″ squares. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Offset Nine-Patch. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SIX (6) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 2 5/8″ squares, which will create TWELVE (12) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Blue 2 5/8″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block as needed to sew it together.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. These are flanked by the results of the Blue
    2 5/8″ squares as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
