T-shirts, T-shirts, T-shirts – Nothing But T-Shirts

Quilt Therapy Posted on February 18, 2015 by TK HarrisonFebruary 15, 2015

As noted last week, I finished sewing the top to a commissioned t-shirt quilt and sent it along to my longarm guru to quilt her magic with it.  I still have the little surprise for the couple the quilt is going to, to make – but that’s just an hour’s worth of sewing.

But never fear, I have yet another load of t-shirts waiting in the wings!

This commissioned t-shirt quilt isn’t expected until our local high school graduation but at the rate I’m going, I need to start on it as soon as possible so I don’t end up putting it together at the last minute.  The fabric for the sashing is ordered and I hope I purchased enough for the borders, too.  If not, will find something compatible locally.

Love working on these special quilts.  Love the fact that the recipient is sharing a piece of their lives so that their memories, from their t-shirts, will be remembered in a quilt.  Very few things beat quilted love!

btw – props to whomever can recall the movie that goes to the title of this post.  The ‘t-shirt’ word is different than in the movie but the sentiment remains.

Flashback Tuesday: Pioneer Sampler 2009 BOM Project Original from BOMquilts.com

Quilt Therapy Posted on February 17, 2015 by TK HarrisonFebruary 15, 2015

This quilt was a blast to make, especially with the fabric I chose for the quilt.  The fabric was sponsored by AbbiMays.com and I just had pure FUN making this baby quilt!

I also cut out all of the fabric for the blocks, along with the monthly patterns and presented them to everyone who wanted one in the small quilt group I attended.  At the end of the first year…and even the second and third year, I saw so many different variations made of the ladies who put that quilt together.  Some added wider sashing and borders to create a lap quilt.  Some didn’t add sashing at all (like in my quilt image below) but made up for the loss by adding bigger border pieces.  We had a small quilt fest at the community library and showed off our quilts and it was amazing how many different quilts were made from the exact same set of blocks that I used.  I was tickled pink!

President’s Day 2015

Quilt Therapy Posted on February 16, 2015 by TK HarrisonFebruary 15, 2015

The third Monday of February is President’s Day, a national holiday in the United States.  It started as a way to honor our first president George Washington as well as Abraham Lincoln, both who had birthdays in February.  However, it has evolved into a day to honor all American presidents.  The banks and post offices are closed and the kids are off of school.

As I watched this video, I thought of my grandfather and my grandmother-in-law.  Both were born in 1909.  My grandpa passed away in 1989 but my husband’s grandmother lived until she was a month shy of her 97th birthday in 1986.  I believe I counted that Grandmother had lived through 15 presidents in her time on Earth.  That is amazing to me…until my husband piped up and said he had lived through 10 of them!

Quilting for Charity Spotlight: Quilts for Kids

Quilt Therapy Posted on February 12, 2015 by TK HarrisonFebruary 9, 2015

Quilts for Kids is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization my local quilt group and myself personally have donated quilts to.  About five years ago, you requested a quilt kit and they sent it to you and you sent it back when it was finished.  Due to the shipping costs, however, they now request that you send $6 to them to pay for shipping a quilt kit to you.

The only thing missing from their quilt kits is the batting.  They pre-cut the pieces which goes with a pattern that’s already written for those fabric pieces.  They send the backing fabric which should also be enough for you to roll over to the front for the binding.  They even send you a little quilt label so you can put your name on it and affix it to the back of your quilt!

Their Mission Statement is:  Transforming fabrics into patchwork quilts that comfort children with life-threatening illnesses and children of abuse.

One of their original Quilts for Kids main sponsors, and 14 years later, they remain one of the main sponsors of Quilts For Kids: P&G AND DOWNY for the Downy Touch of Comfort Program that enabled us to create over 10,000 quilt kits to send to quilters across the country.  The little label that goes on the back of the quilt has Proctor & Gamble’s Downy on the label.  It really just makes you want to sink your face into the fabric, to feel the sensation of how soft a quilt is after it’s washed with Downy.  And even moreso, knowing it’s for a child in need.

Please help support this organization – either just yourself or as a group or quilt guild.  This is a great way to bring quilters together, one quilt for a child at a time.  Read more about them here:
