Star Power: Braced Star Quilt Block & Braced Star Variation Quilt Block

Braced Star Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Braced Star Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Forest Green: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. (These will flank the White 3 3/8″ square & will “frame” TWO (2) sides of it as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Steel Gray: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ x 6 1/8″ rectangle. (These will flank the White 3 3/8″ square & will “frame” TWO (2) sides of it as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Sage Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Sage Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Sage Green 2 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Sage Green 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

Braced Star Variation Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Turquoise: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ x 3 3/8″ rectangles. (These will flank the White 3 3/8″ square & provide a “frame” around TWO (2) sides of it as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Emerald Green: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ x 6 1/8″ rectangles. (These will flank the White 3 3/8″ square & provide a “frame” around TWO (2) sides of it as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 3 1/4″ square. which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4 ” squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the Green
    2 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the Green 2 1/2″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. (These are flanked by the results of the Green 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Salmon: Cut EIGHT (8) 2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Salmon: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares & with the results of the White 4 7/8″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Salmon 2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Salmon
    5 1/4″ squares & with the results of the White 4 7/8″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the results of the Salmon 5 1/4″ squares & with the results of the White 5 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Quarter-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (precise 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Gray: Cut SIXTEEN (16) 1 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the results of the Gray
    2 3/8″  squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut EIGHT (8) 1 1/2 x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are sandwiched between the Half-Square Triangles & the Gray 1 1/2″ x 2″ rectangles. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 3/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares, which will create THIRTY-TWO (32) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 3/8″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Gray 2 3/8″ squares, which will create THIRTY-TWO (32) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
