Flashback Tuesday: Santorini Stars 2010 BOM Quilt designed by BOMquilts.com

Quilt Therapy Posted on June 17, 2014 by TK HarrisonJune 13, 2014

This quilt is one that I had the most fun making.  I *love* raw-edge applique and I designed and made the templates for my quilt using a pinking blade in my rotary cutter.  The instructions allow for other types of applique but most of our local little quilt group made this quilt with their own scrappy fabrics and colors and it was SO. MUCH. FUN. to see how different everyone’s finished out (you can see one here and a few more here)!  Not to mention that each block goes together very quickly, if you use raw-edge applique, because you just cut and sew using your own creativity!

I was a nanny to a baby 25-years-ago (eeeek!) and this was the quilt I gave her upon her college graduation.  I had intended to give her a completely different quilt when she graduated from high school…but, it didn’t fit with her personality.  THIS one spoke her name to me and she absolutely loves it!

Go on, have a little more quilt therapy fun and enjoy making this festive quilt!

Quilting for a Virtual Friend’s Daughter

Quilt Therapy Posted on June 16, 2014 by TK HarrisonJune 13, 2014

Donna and I decided have been virtual friends for about 14 years.  We’ve never met though we came pretty close one time!  LOL  We have emailed back and forth and even talked to each other on the phone in year’s past.  This year, her daughter graduated from high school. I asked Donna if I could make a quilt for her daughter.  She was speechless, to say the least, that I would want to do something like that for folks I’ve never met.  But, there’s more to virtual friendships than meets the eye…and I felt compelled to send a quilt to her daughter as a graduation gift.  As Donna wrote about it, she said it was the most personal gift that her daughter received.

Here’s a pix of the completed quilt top:

And here’s a pix of the beautiful quilting that Meloney Funk used – of special note is that the recipient’s middle name is Rose so Meloney quilted the quilt with cabbage roses:

And here’s a photo of the high school graduate with her quilt:

I hope she uses it as it was meant to be used – and loves it as it was made with quilted love!

Flashback Tuesday: Lovely Table Toppers

Quilt Therapy Posted on June 10, 2014 by TK HarrisonJune 9, 2014

I designed and made this trio of “Lovely” spring table toppers, with free patterns at BOMquilts.com, for a friend who wanted to use them to display her products at local craft shows.  I think they are sew very simple to make and if you made them with four different fabric sets, you could have one each for every season!

Friday Funday: T-Shirt Pillow Cases

Quilt Therapy Posted on June 6, 2014 by TK HarrisonJune 2, 2014

When I made a commissioned quilt last year, we had to cull a few of the t-shirt blocks because there were too many t-shirts for the size of quilt the client asked for.  However, I didn’t want to waste the t-shirts as I had already prepared them with stabilizer and they meant a lot to the gift recipient.

Next best thing?  I made pillow cases out of them!

Nothing should go to waste when quilting – and the recipient loved these almost as much as her t-shirt quilt!

Don’t Use it, Don’t Need It – Gift it to Someone Who Will Use It!

Quilt Therapy Posted on June 4, 2014 by TK HarrisonJune 2, 2014

I was searching for some fabric on my overflowing fabric stash shelves and came across these two small samples I had made some time in the past.  I believe it was when I first received my AccuQuilt studio cutter and I wanted to play with the shapes of the dyes.

I emailed the lady in charge of our quilt group at our church, attaching these two photos, and asked her if she had any use for them.  I knew the ladies made larger quilts for their Lutheran World Relief projects as well as giving quilts to graduates…but wasn’t sure of who else they made quilts for and if they had any need for these 40 1/2″ squares.

Wouldn’t you know, she said absolutely – and anything else I came up with in my searching, regardless of whether it was the sizes of the above pieces or just single blocks.  And then I hung my head in shame…knowing that now I would feel compelled to go through those shelves to find more.

But, I did it…at least as far as I could  get it done as I couldn’t reach all of my shelves (oh yeah is the day that I am able to get into my quilt studio and be able to access whatever I needed, whenever I needed it)!

I came up with nearly a full paper sack of this-n-that to give to the quilters.  And when I went to pick up the kids from Sunday school on Sunday morning, I saw the quilt-lady-in-charge carrying that bag to her car.  Guess she wanted to see what I sent before sharing it with the rest of the ladies!

And as an added bonus, most of my shelves are now cleared of items I would not use again so when my studio is complete, I won’t have as much to cull as I would if I hadn’t found these first two samples!
