On Cloud Nine: Cats & Mice Quilt Block

Cats & Mice Quilt Block Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Cats & Mice Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Dark Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These will flank the Light Gray 3 1/2″ squares on ONE (1) side, which will help create FOUR (4) Almost a Square in a Square’s for this quilt block.)
  • Peach: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Light Gray 6 1/2″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Peach: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Light Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked on THREE (3) sides by the results of the White 3″ squares & on the other side by the Dark Gray 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. All of these together will create FOUR (4) Almost Square in a Square’s for this quilt block.)
  • Light Gray: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Peach 3 1/4″ square, which will create a Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Peach 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SIX (6) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Light Gray 3 1/2″ squares, which will help create FOUR (4) Almost a Square in a Square’s for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the results of the Peach 3 1/4″ squares as needed for this quilt block.

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

(Ed. Note: This can be a scrappy quilt block! Just pull out your scraps & use whatever you have to make this quilt block!)

  • Multiple Colors: Cut a total of NINETEEN (19) 2″ squares. (These are all paired with each other as needed for this quilt block.)
  • TWO (2) Different Colors: Cut ONE (1) 3″ square of each color. (These are paired with the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • THREE (3) Different Colors: Cut ONE (1) 3″ square of each color. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 7″ square as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the “TWO (2) Different Colors,” which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will be the lower left-hand & the lower right-hand corner’s of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked on TWO (2) sides by the results of the White 5″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides the White 2″ squares & on the other TWO (2) sides the White 2″ x 4 3/4″ rectangle, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. (These are paired with the White 5″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (TWO (2) of these are paired with the White 2″ squares, which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners. And the other TWO (2) are paired with the White 2″ x 4 3/4″ rectangle which will create TWO (2) more Snowball Corners. All of these together will also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2″ squares. (These are flanked on TWO (2) sides by the results of the Red 3 1/4″ square. And on ONE (1) other side by the White 2″ square, which will create TWO (2)  Snowball Corners. All of these together will also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2″ x 4 3/4″ rectangle. (This is paired on TWO (2) ends with the White 2″ squares which will create TWO (2) Snowball Corners. It will also be flanked by the results of the Red 3 1/4″ square. All of these together will also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 5″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

(Ed. Note: This can be a scrappy quilt block! No need to follow my color suggestions. Just pull out your scraps & use whatever you have to make this quilt block!)

  • Bright Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired on ONE (1) side, with the White
    2 1/2″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired on ONE (1) side, with the White 2 1/2″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired on TWO (2) sides, with the White 2 1/2″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut THREE (3) 2 1/2″ squares. (TWO (2) of these are paired on ONE (1) side with the White 2 1/2″ squares. The other ONE (1) is paired on TWO (2) sides with the White 2 1/2″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SIX (6) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Bright Pink 2 1/2″ squares, the Blue 2 1/2″ squares, the Green 2 1/2″ squares & the Purple 2 1/2″ squares. As needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 1 1/2″ x 10 1/2″ rectangles. (These will be the left & right borders of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 1 1/2″ x 12 1/2″ rectangles. (These will be the top & bottom borders of this quilt block.)

  • White: Cut SIXTEEN (16) 3″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 2″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles & the White 2″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. Which will create SIXTEEN (16) Snowball Corners as needed for this quilt block.)
