On Cloud Nine: Gentleman’s Fancy Quilt Block

Gentleman’s Fancy Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Black: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Light Green: Cut TWO (2) 5 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Dark Green 5″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Dark Green: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will be flanked by the results of the Light Green 5″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Light Green 5 1/4″ squares as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Black 4 1/2″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Blue 3 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Blue 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Gold: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Gold: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. (These are paired with the White 5″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Gold 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Gold 5″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These will flank on TWO (2) ends, the results of the White 3″ squares, as needed for this quilt block.)

  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 1″ squares. (These will flank the Pink 1″ x 1 1/2″ rectangles. TWO (2) of them will be placed at the lower right-hand corner & TWO (2) of them will be placed in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 1″ x 1 1/2″ rectangles. (These are flanked by the Pink 1″ squares. TWO (2) of them will be placed at the lower right-hand corner & TWO (2) of them will be placed in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the ends of the Pink
    1 1/4″ x 7″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/4″ x 7″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 1 1/4″ x 7″ rectangles. They’ll also be flanked on TWO (2) sides by the results of the White 5 1/2″ squares.)
  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 1″ squares. (These will flank the Purple 1″ x 1 1/2″ rectangles. TWO (2) of them will be placed at the lower left-hand corner & TWO (2) of them will be placed in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 1″ x 1 1/2″ rectangles. (These are flanked by the Purple 1″ squares. TWO (2) of them will be placed at the lower left-hand corner & TWO (2) of them will be placed in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 1″ x 1 1/2″ rectangles. (These are flanked by the Purple 1″ squares. TWO (2) of them will be placed at the lower left-hand corner & TWO (2) of them will be placed in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the ends of the Purple 1 1/4″ x 7″ rectangles as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/4″ x 7″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 1 1/4″ x 7″ rectangles. They’ll also be flanked on TWO (2) sides by the results of the White 5 1/2″ squares.)

    1 1/4″ x 7″ rectangles, or the Purple 1 1/4″ x 7″ rectangles, as needed for this quilt block.
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/4″ x 7″ rectangles. (These are paired with either the Purple 1 1/4″ x 7″ rectangles, or the Pink 1 1/4″ x 7″ rectangles, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 5 3/4″ squares. (These are paired with the White 5 3/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. You only need THREE (3) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 7″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are the upper left-hand & upper right-hand corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut ONE (1) 13 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This is flanked by the results of the White 7″ square. They’re also the lower left-hand & lower right-hand corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 5 3/4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 5 3/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. You only need THREE (3) of these Half-Square Triangles for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 3/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank on ONE (1) side the results of the Green 5 3/4″ squares, they’ll flank on ONE (1) other side the results of the Green 7″ square & they’ll flank on the ONE (1) last side the results of the Green 13 1/4″ square. As needed for this quilt block.)
