On Cloud Nine: Thunder & Lightening Quilt Block

Thunder & Lightening Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Thunder & Lightening Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Pink 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles will also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Red 2 7/8″ squares, which will create SIXTEEN (16) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Black 3 3/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
  • Black: Cut ONE (1) 3 3/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Orange: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Peach 2 1/2″ squares, which will create a “frame” around the Yellow 4 1/2″ square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Peach: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Orange 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles, which will create a “frame” around the Yellow 4 1/2″ square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Peach: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Flying Geese. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Yellow 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blush: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 4 7/8″ squares as needed for this quilt block.
  • Blush: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Yellow
    4 7/8″ square which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Beige: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Quarter-Square Triangle in the center, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 4 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These are paired with the results of the Blush
