On Cloud Nine: Good Luck Quilt Block

Good Luck Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Good Luck Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles.)
  • Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1)time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles. (These triangles are paired on ONE (1) end with the Red & White 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. They’ll also be the lower left-hand & the upper right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1)time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the results of the White
    3 7/8″ square. Which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. Once they’re sewn together they’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Dk. Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles. (These are paired on ONE (1) end with the White & Pink 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. They’re also the upper left-hand & the lower right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Red 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Blue 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the results of the Blue
    3 7/8″ square. Which will create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. Once they’re sewn together they’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the White & Pink 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. They’re also the upper left-hand & the lower right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the White 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles where they’re paired with the Red 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

(Ed. Note: There are an equal number of Squares & Half-Square Triangles in this quilt block. If it’s easier then cut all of them out at once & sew them together using the Spools Quilt Block Diagram below as your guide.)

  • Aqua: Cut SIX (6) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Aqua/White Half-Square Triangles. They’re also paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares. All together they’ll create TWO (2) Nine-Patches which are the upper right-hand & the lower left-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Aqua/White Half-Square Triangles. They’re also paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares. All together they’ll create TWO (2) Nine-Patches which are the lower left-hand & the upper right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. Then they’re paired with the Aqua 2 1/2″ squares. As well as the White 2 1/2″ squares.  All together they’ll create TWO (2) Nine-Patches which are the upper right-hand & the lower left-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • Aqua: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. Then they’re paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares. As well as the Aqua 2 1/2″ squares.  All together they’ll create TWO (2) Nine-Patches which are the upper right-hand & the lower left-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Aqua/White Half-Square Triangles. They’re also paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares. All together they’ll create TWO (2) Nine-Patches which are the upper right-hand & the lower left-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut SIX 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Aqua/White Half-Square Triangles. They’re also paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares. All together they’ll create TWO (2) Nine-Patches which are the lower left-hand & the upper right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Aqua 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. Then they’re paired with the Aqua 2 1/2″ squares. As well as the White 2 1/2″ squares.  All together they’ll create TWO (2) Nine-Patches which are the upper right-hand & the lower left-hand corners of this quilt block.)

King of King’s Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Brown: Cut THREE (3) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create SIX (6) Half-Square Triangles. Only FIVE (5) Half-Square Triangles are needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut THREE (3) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. Only FIVE (5) of these triangles are needed for this quilt block. (These triangles are paired with the results of the White 10 3/8″ square.)
  • Gold: Cut FIVE (5) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 1/2″ squares. They’re also paired with the Brown/White Half-Square Triangles. When sewn together they’ll also be the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block.)
  • Gold: Cut SIX (6) 2 1/2″ squares. (These squares are nestled between the Brown/White Half-Square Triangles & the results of the Brown 2 7/8″ squares.)
  • White: Cut THREE (3) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Brown 2 7/8″ squares which will create SIX (6) Half-Square Triangles. Only FIVE (5) Half-Square Triangles are needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ squares. (These are paired with the Gold 2 1/2″ squares. They’ll help create the upper left-hand corner of this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Beige: Cut ONE (1) 1 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s paired with the Beige 3″ squares & the Blue 1 1/2″ x 3″ rectangles they’ll create ONE (1) Uneven Nine-Patch.)
  • Beige: Cut FOUR (4) 3″ squares. (These squares will help create the center of this quilt block. They’re paired with the Beige 1 1/2″ square & they’re also paired with the Blue 1 1/2″ x 3″ rectangles. All together they’ll create ONE (1) Uneven Nine-Patch.)
  • Beige: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These squares are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. When paired with the Blue 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles they’ll create TWO (2) Uneven Three-Patch)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ x 3″ rectangles. (These rectangles are paired with the Beige 1 1/2″
    square. They’re also paired with the Beige 3″ squares. Once sewn together they’ll create ONE (1) Uneven Nine-Patch.)
  • Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangles. (These rectangles are paired with the Beige

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 1 7/8″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TEN (10) 3 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the White
    1 7/8″ squares which will create FORTY (40) Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut FORTY (40) 1 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Blue
    3 1/4″ squares which will create FORTY (40) Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut SIXTEEN (16) 1 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired on ONE (1) side the Blue/White Flying Geese. They’ll also be paired on ONE (1) other side with the White 1 7/8″ x
    7 5/8″ rectangles.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ x 7 5/8″ rectangles which will create FOUR (4) Snowball Corners.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the results of the Blue 1 7/8″ squares where they meet in the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 7 5/8″ rectangles. (These are paired on ONE (1) end with the White 1 7/8″ squares. They’re also paired on ONE (1) other end with the Blue 1 7/8″ square in the center of this quilt block.)
