Quilting for Charity Spotlight: Wrap Them In Love Foundation

Quilt Therapy Posted on February 19, 2015 by TK HarrisonFebruary 15, 2015

“The Wrap Them in Love Foundation is a non-profit, tax exempt organization created to help children of all ages around the world.

“Our Mission is to collect donated quilts and distribute them to children around the world, so they can be wrapped in love and comfort. As we all know, a quilt is a very special thing. It isn’t just a blanket; it has been lovingly created by a real person. A quilter leaves a part of themselves in every quilt they make. The child who receives it will be able to snuggle up in all the love and comfort that comes in that quilt.”  (source)

The quilts that are donated are shared with children near and far.  These two little girls, wrapped in a warm quilt, are located in South Dakota.

This little cutie received a Wrap Them in Love Foundation quilt in Russia.

There are always going to be needs.  What I like the most about this foundation is that you can sew a quilt and donate it to them – or, if you don’t sew, you can donate funds to help them buy fabric to make quilts.  Hooray for the Wrap Them in Love Foundation!

Quilting for Charity Spotlight: Quilts for Kids

Quilt Therapy Posted on February 12, 2015 by TK HarrisonFebruary 9, 2015

Quilts for Kids is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization my local quilt group and myself personally have donated quilts to.  About five years ago, you requested a quilt kit and they sent it to you and you sent it back when it was finished.  Due to the shipping costs, however, they now request that you send $6 to them to pay for shipping a quilt kit to you.

The only thing missing from their quilt kits is the batting.  They pre-cut the pieces which goes with a pattern that’s already written for those fabric pieces.  They send the backing fabric which should also be enough for you to roll over to the front for the binding.  They even send you a little quilt label so you can put your name on it and affix it to the back of your quilt!

Their Mission Statement is:  Transforming fabrics into patchwork quilts that comfort children with life-threatening illnesses and children of abuse.

One of their original Quilts for Kids main sponsors, and 14 years later, they remain one of the main sponsors of Quilts For Kids: P&G AND DOWNY for the Downy Touch of Comfort Program that enabled us to create over 10,000 quilt kits to send to quilters across the country.  The little label that goes on the back of the quilt has Proctor & Gamble’s Downy on the label.  It really just makes you want to sink your face into the fabric, to feel the sensation of how soft a quilt is after it’s washed with Downy.  And even moreso, knowing it’s for a child in need.

Please help support this organization – either just yourself or as a group or quilt guild.  This is a great way to bring quilters together, one quilt for a child at a time.  Read more about them here:

Layers of Hope:  Quilting 911

While this charity quilt organization is not one of the more popular charity quilt groups – I can personally vouch for the Granny behind the quilts.  She is salt of the earth.  She is a Granny raising a second family that consists of her grandchildren.  She is always where she is needed most.  She has a quilted heart full of love for those she knows and doesn’t know – for those who need to feel the comfort and security only a quilt can give.

Click on the image above to see what Layers of Hope does and please consider this one of the charities you contribute to in 2015.

Layers of Hope Needs Your Quilts!

Quilt Therapy Posted on January 15, 2015 by TK HarrisonJanuary 12, 2015

I was contacted by my friend, the QuiltingRanny (Jean Kester) from Layers of Hope-Quilting 911, with a plea for help.

“If you have watched the news at all this week, you could not have missed that coastal Washington and northern Washington was deluged with over 6″ of rain in a 24 hour period of time which caused severe flooding, rivers to over flow their banks and landslides.”

You can read about the mudslides here:  https://q13fox.com/2015/01/05/watch-large-loud-landslide-captured-on-live-tv/ and you can see photos of the flooding and mudslides here:  httpss://www.facebook.com/KIRO7Seattle/photos/pcb.918806038139150/918805241472563/?type=1&theater

Jean needs quilts to spread around to those affected by this latest natural disaster.  Don’t you have one or two or ten completed quilts needing a new and loving home?  If so, Jean would love to help share them with those in need – her mailing address is on her blog.  She also accepts monetary donations to help with whatever needs she may have – thread, fabric, shipping, etc.  Jean is the real deal and she is SO committed to getting quilts to those in need.  Please take some time to read of the plight in her area and then consider donating quilt(s) and/or funds.

What a Feeling to Pay it Forward from a Simple Goal!

Quilt Therapy Posted on January 8, 2015 by TK HarrisonJanuary 5, 2015

I really do not like to call attention to myself for sharing the talents and gifts I have been gifted with and then paying it forward with donations.  I believe we are to give without calling attention to ourselves.  But a goal was reached this year, despite everything, and I am extremely happy that I was able to do what I set out to do.  My goal was to make a quilt top a month for our church’s Lutheran World Relief quilt efforts.  I didn’t do it alone.  Far from it.  My secret special person, who has sent me $20 a month since I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease four years ago, played a part in this goal.  I used most of those funds from 2014 to purchase fabric with.  My foster mother played a part in this goal.  She visited our house in November and she pieced three of the quilt tops for me.  My family played a part in this goal.  They allowed me the time to cut and sew these quilt tops together.  And with every single quilt top I pieced, I prayed for whomever and whatever was on my mind – it is always my special time to reach out to God with each stitch I made.

A goal was reached.  By me.  In the four years since my diagnosis, I have not been able to make a goal and fulfill it.  Too many distractions, too many doctor’s appointments, too many extracurricular activities, too many painful days – all of that adds up to not enough time, energy or gumption for me to deal with any goals I may have had.

One goal down, hopefully many more to follow.
