Ribbon Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Purple: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. TWO (2) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the lower left- & right-hand corners of this quilt block.)
- Purple: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank the results of the White 6 1/2″ square, which will partially create TWO (2) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
- Purple: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/2″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This triangle will be flanked by the results of the White 3 7/8″ square, which will create ONE (1) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
- Purple: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/2″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These triangles will be flanked by the results of the Purple 3 7/8″ square & they’ll also be flanked by the results of the White 3 7/8″ square. All are needed to sew this quilt block together.)
- Purple: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ x 6 1/2″ rectangle. (This rectangle’s paired with the Purple/White Flying Geese on ONE (1) side & it’s also paired with the White/Purple Flying Geese one ONE (1) other side. In addition it’s paired with TWO (2) of the Half-Square Triangles on the TWO (2) remaining sides. All are needed to sew this quilt block together.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles will flank the results of the Purple 6 1/2″ square, which will create ONE (1) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. TWO (2) of these Half-Square Triangles will be the lower left- & right-hand corners of this quilt block)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These triangles will flank ONE (1) side of the Purple 6 1/2″ triangles which will partially create TWO (2) Flying Geese. They’ll also be the upper left & right hand corners of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 6 1/2″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles. You only need ONE (1) of these triangles for this quilt block. (This triangle will be flanked by the results of the Purple 3 7/8″ square, which will create ONE (1) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)

If you sew TWELVE (12) “Ribbon Quilt Blocks” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
