Square in Squares Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Lilac: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
- Lilac: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- Purple: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 1/2″ squares. (FOUR (4) of these squares are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block. The other FOUR (4) of these squares, are paired with the White side of the Half-Square Triangles & they’ll help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- Purple: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Lilac 2 3/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Lilac 2 7/8″ squares which will create EIGHT (8) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also help create the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Purple 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the Flying Geese as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Square in Squares Quilt Blocks,” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
