Old Maid’s Star Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Blue: Cut ONE (1) 4 3/4″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
- Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the results of the White
2 3/8″ squares & they’re also paired with the results of the White 4 1/4″ square. Together they’ll flank the Aqua 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.) - Aqua: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the White 4 1/4″ square, as well as the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares. When sewn together with the Blue 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles, they’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are paired with the Blue 2″ x
3 1/2″ rectangles & they’re also paired with the results of the White 4 1/4″ square. Together they’ll flank the Aqua 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.) - White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. - Bright Pink: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Pink 3 1/2″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. They’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
- Bright Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangles. (These are paired with the results of the White 4 1/4″ square & they’re also paired with the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares. Together they’ll flank the Pink 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Pink: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the Bright Pink 4 1/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
- Pink: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These are flanked by the results of the White 2 3/8″ squares & they’re also flanked by the results of the White 4 1/4″ square. When sewn together with the Bright Pink 2″ x 3 1/2″ rectangle, they’ll create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.
