Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Green: Cut FIVE (5) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FIVE (5) Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut EIGHT (8) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 3 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) additional Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TEN (10) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Green 3 1/2″ squares, which will create FIVE (5) Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are flanked by the Blue 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) additional Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Crystal Star Quilt Blocks,” you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
Crystal Star Variation Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Orange: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 3 1/4″ square, which will create the second Square in a Square, for the center of this quilt block.)
- Orange: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Yellow: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the White 3 1/4″ square, which will create the first Square in a Square, for the center of this quilt block.)
- Yellow: Cut EIGHT (8) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the White 3 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) additional Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the Yellow 2 1/2″ square, which will create the first Square in a Square, for the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut EIGHT (8) 3″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Orange 3 1/2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be flanked by the results of the Yellow 3″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) additional Square in a Square’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
