Empire Star Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Purple: Cut ONE (1) 4 3/4″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the White 4″ squares, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
- Purple: Cut TWO (2) 4″ squares. (These are paired with the White 4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
- Purple: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square.Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the Purple 4 3/4″ square, which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Purple 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Empire Star Quilt Blocks,” you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
Empire Star Variation Quilt Block

(These will flank the White 3 1/2″ square which will create the first Square in a Square for this quilt block. It’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
- Aqua: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked by the results of the Aqua 4″ square which will create the first Square in a Square for this quilt block. It’ll also be the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 4″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Aqua 4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They will also be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Aqua 4 1/4″ square which will create the second Square in a Square. It’ll also help create the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Aqua 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
