Union Star Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Dark Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
- Dark Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut SIX (6) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares, which will create TWELVE (12) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut SIX (6) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side the square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Blue 2 7/8″ squares, which will create TWELVE (12) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the Dark Blue 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles.
- White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Union Star Quilt Blocks,” you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
Union Star Variation Quilt Block

- Dark Teal: Cut TWO (2) 2 3/4″ squares. (These will be paired with TWO (2) of the White 2 3/4″ squares to create half-square triangles.)
- Dark Teal: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles.
- Teal: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square.
- Teal: Cut SIX (6) 2 3/4″ squares. (These will be paired with SIX (6) of the White 2 3/4″ squares to create half-square triangles.)
- Teal: Cut FOUR (4) 2 3/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.
- White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2 3/4″ squares. On the back side the square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will be paired with the Dark Teal 2 3/4″ and the Teal 2 3/4″ squares to create half-square triangles.)
- White: Cut SIX (6) 2 3/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You’ll end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.
- White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles.
