State of Iowa Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (precise 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 1 3/4″ squares.
  • Red: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/4″ x 6 ” strips.
  • Red: Cut THIRTY (30) 1 3/4″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 6″ square.
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/4″ x 6 ” strips.
  • White: Cut THIRTY (30) 1 3/4″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These will be paired with the Red 1 3/4″ squares to make half-square triangles.)
  • White: Cut FIFTEEN (15) 1 3/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.

Hunter’s Star Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (precise 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square.
  • Pink: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block).
  • Red: Cut TWO (2) 1 3/4″ x 3 1/4″ strips.
  • Red: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles.
  • Dark Pink: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square.
  • Dark Pink: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block).
  • Dark Red: Cut TWO (2) 1 3/4″ x 3 1/4″ strips.
  • Dark Red: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles.
  • Gold: Cut ONE (1) 8 3/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles.

  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square.
  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block).
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 1 3/4″ x 3 1/4″ strips.
  • Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles.
  • Dark Purple: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square.

  • Dark Blue: Cut TWO (2) 1 3/4″ x 3 1/4″ strips.
  • Dark Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles.
  • Olive Green: Cut ONE (1) 9 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block).
  • Dark Olive Green: Cut ONE (1) 9 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block).

  • Blue: Cut SIXTEEN (16) 1 3/4″ squares.
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square.
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 1 1/2″ squares.

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (precise 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Light Green: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square.
  • Light Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.
  • Ash Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares.
  • Ash Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/4″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.
  • Ash Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.
  • Ash Green: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are for the Flying Geese.)
  • Christmas Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ squares.
  • Christmas Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/4″ squares. On the back side of each square draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time.
  • Christmas Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square.
  • Christmas Green: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are for the flying geese.)
  • White: Cut TWELVE (12) 2″ squares.
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/4″ squares. (These will be paired with the FOUR (4) Ash Green 2 1/4″ squares to create half-square triangles.)
