Star Power: Frayed Sawtooth Quilt Block & Frayed Sawtooth Variation Quilt Block

Frayed Sawtooth Quilt Block Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Frayed Sawtooth Quilt Block




Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut SIX (6) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the Blue 2″ squares, which will create FIVE (5) Four-Patch’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Green: Cut TWO (2) 2″ squares. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ strips, which will partially create a “frame” around the Four-Patch, in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut SIX (6) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the Green 2″ squares, which will create FIVE (5) Four-Patch’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2″ squares. (These will flank on two sides the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ strips, which will partially create a “frame” around the Four-Patch, in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Gold: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. (These will flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut EIGHT (8) 2″ squares. (These are paired with either the Blue 2″ squares or the Green 2″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Four-Patch’s, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ strips. (These will be flanked by either the Blue 2″ squares or the Green 2″ squares, which will create a “frame” around the Four-Patch in the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the Gold 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Frayed Sawtooth Quilt Blocks,” you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.

Frayed Sawtooth Variation Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the Purple 2″ squares, which will create a Four-Patch. This will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 2″ squares. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ strips, which will partially create a “frame” around the Four-Patch, in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 2″ squares. (These are paired with the Pink 2″ squares, which will create a Four-Patch. This will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 2″ squares. (These will flank on TWO (2) sides the White 2″ x 3 1/2″ strips, which will partially create a “frame” around the Four-Patch, in the center of this quilt block.)
  • Turquoise: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These will be the four corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 2″ x 3 1/2″ strips. (These will be flanked by either the Pink 2″ squares or the Blue 2″ squares, which will create a “frame” around the Four-Patch, in the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the Turquoise 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Green: Cut FOUR (4) 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. (These will flank on all FOUR (4) sides, the White 4 1/2″ square, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Gray: Cut FOUR (4) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 5 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/2″ square. (This will be flanked on all FOUR (4) sides, by the Green 2 1/2″ x 4 1/2″ strips. It will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 4 1/2″ squares. (These will be the FOUR (4) corner’s of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 5 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the Gray 2 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)

Devil’s Claw Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Brown: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles per square. (These will flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ squares, and will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • Brown: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These are paired with the results of the White 7 1/4″ square, to create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. This will also be the center of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Brown 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will be flanked by the results of the Brown 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed for this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You will end up with FOUR (4) triangles. You only need TWO (2) of these triangles for this quilt block. (These are paired with the results of the Brown 7 1/4″ square, to create ONE (1) Quarter-Square Triangle. This will also be the center of this quilt block.)
