Monkey Wrench Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Brown 2 5/8″ squares, which will create a Four-Patch. They will also be the center of this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank TWO (2) sides of the Four-Patch, they will also create Square in a Square #1, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut ONE (1) 5″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will be flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Blue 6 7/8″ square & on the other side by the results of the Brown 6 7/8″ square, which will create Square in a Square #2 as needed for this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut ONE (1) 6 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will create Square in a Square #3 & they will also be TWO (2) corners of this quilt block.)
- Brown: Cut TWO (2) 2 5/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Blue 2 5/8″ squares, which will create a Four-Patch. They will also be the center of this quilt block.)
- Brown: Cut ONE (1) 3 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will flank TWO (2) sides of the Four-Patch, they will also create Square in a Square #1, as needed for this quilt block.)
- Brown: Cut ONE (1) 5″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will be flanked on ONE (1) side by the results of the Blue 6 7/8″ square & on the other side by the results of the Brown 6 7/8″ square, which will create Square in a Square #2 as needed for this quilt block.)
- Brown: Cut ONE (1) 6 7/8″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. You will end up with TWO (2) triangles. (These will create Square in a Square #3 & they will also be TWO (2) corners of this quilt block.)

If you make TWELVE (12) “Monkey Wrench Quilt Blocks,†you will end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
