Testing 123, Testing

Quilt Therapy Posted on February 10, 2014 by TK HarrisonFebruary 9, 2014

I am making a quilt for a virtual friend’s daughter who graduates from high school this year.  Once we picked out the fabrics and they were Mom-approved by my virtual friend Donna, I was anxious to start on this quilt.

Let me make it clear – this quilt will be ‘defined’ by the quilting.  Blocks and blocks will take care of the piecing but I want Meloney’s quilting to stand out.  I want the quilting to shine.  Here are the rows that I put together this evening:

Since this is a quick and easy pattern, I should be able to finish it in a few days!

Another T-Shirt Quilt (continued)

Quilt Therapy Posted on November 12, 2013 by TK HarrisonNovember 12, 2013

As stated in this post, the t-shirt quilt I was commissioned to make is two-sided, reversible.  This evening, I completed the back side of the quilt.  The front has all white t-shirts on it, the back has the colored t-shirts on it.  I can’t decide which one I like better – but both are super, to me!

And I amazed myself in that I made this side knowing my final size was to match the top side.  Once the back was complete, I laid it out on my bed and put the front quilt on top of it – and was astounded that they matched up nearly perfectly!

On to my quilter so I can put a DONE stamp on this fun project!

Quilt Flashback Tuesday: Dandy Doodle Quilt

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 1, 2013 by TK HarrisonSeptember 30, 2013

It is always fun to look back at older photographs on my computer to see what I was quilting at a certain time in my life…in my children’s lives…and in the lives of my extended family.  It’s also a good way for me to document my quilts and recipients – since MS has robbed me of much of my memory.

This Quilt Flashback Tuesday, I’d like to feature a quilt I made for my nephew upon his high school graduation.  At the time, he was committed to serving in the Navy so the obvious choice for me was to make him a red, white and blue quilt.  He never made it to the Navy but he now has the completed quilt.  It’s too small for him to fit on a bed but perhaps he uses it as a lap quilt.

I started making the blocks from a free block of the month quilt offered by Planet Patchwork in 2005 and 2006.  The pattern is no longer free but it is available on their website here.

Here are two of the blocks from his quilt (circa 6/11/2006):

And this is the finished quilt!

Birthday Blessings: A Pincushion

Quilt Therapy Posted on September 5, 2013 by TK HarrisonSeptember 2, 2013

Friday, August 23rd was my last birthday before I reach the big 5-0.  We had taken my daughter to college to unload all of her dorm necessities and then shopped for her dorm refrigerator and microwave.  I needed a break, at that point, so we locked everything up and went and had lunch.

My lovely quilter, Meloney, met us at the restaurant so I could give her a quilt that I needed quilted.  We had visited via email that morning and then, when I went home to get ready to head to the big city, Meloney got on Facebook and saw that it was my birthday.

She couldn’t let such a milestone and potential celebration go without gifting me with something special.  She made this pincushion while her family was vacationing in Hawaii last year – and I feel special that she gifted it to me!

Good friends are hard to come by – but, I know, without a doubt, that Meloney is just that – a friend, a collaborator and a God-loving honest woman…who made sure my birthday didn’t go unnoticed!

Word of Mouth Marketing

Quilt Therapy Posted on August 22, 2013 by TK HarrisonAugust 22, 2013

Many marketing experts will tell you that THE BEST way to get your business seen and heard is through word-of-mouth marketing.  Although all of us would prefer positive testimonials, even the bad press can be used to one’s advantage.

SEEN and HEARD.  Those are the names of the game in any marketing plan – supply and demand are the other two that rank right up there for necessities but I’ll focus on that in a different post.

As for quilters, they can get their star seen by submitting patterns and quilted projects to magazines, to charity auctions – the options are virtually endless for a quilter to go from simply a hobby quilter to someone considered an expert in their field.

I want to give you a perfect example of word-of-mouth advertising that has affected me tremendously this week.  If you’ve read this blog at all for the past few months, you should know I made a t-shirt quilt for a friend’s daughter as a high school graduation gift.  You can read about my blog posts pertaining to the quilt here and here and here.

Once the quilt was delivered and happily received (see here), I told the Mom of the recipient that if she wanted to share my info with her friends, I’d love to visit with them about making their kids’ t-shirt quilts, too.  That mom went above and beyond my expectations with her word-of-mouth advertising for me!  She first sent an email to the folks in her homeowner’s association with a photo of her daughter’s quilt and my contact information.  Then she sent a note to a friend who is also a mom of a girl who is on the same drill team as her daughter was on in high school.  Through both of these instances, I’ve had TWO emails in a single day from ladies who are interested in t-shirt quilts for their upcoming graduates.

Word-of-mouth advertising works, and works well, if you are wanting to sell your creativity on a shoestring marketing budget.  Try it!
