New Quilt Studio is Ready!

Quilt Therapy Posted on August 14, 2014 by TK HarrisonAugust 11, 2014

As long-time readers may recall, my (third) foster mother gifted me with a building to house my new quilt studio last year (read about it here).  The inside was unfinished so my husband has been working, when he can, to get it completed.  It’s been slow going as there have many things that take up his time so he has been unable to work on it on any type of regular schedule.  It really doesn’t matter whether it was ready or not or why he couldn’t finish it on anyone’s timeline – it’s ready now!

The first phase of the move-in is getting our longarm set up as we need to see how much room it will take up in the studio.  Hubster has the frame put together and will continue to work on it, when he can.  And we’ve created a workable and systemic move for my sewing room in the house so I do not get overwhelmed or stressed about moving everything in one day.  Slow and easy wins the race – stress makes my MS stand up to be noticed, and not in a good way, either.

We still need a curtain for the restroom and curtains on the windows…my MIL is helping me with those since she sold custom draperies for 25 years.  Just waiting on hubby finding the time to go into the barn and find the hardware needed for everything – and let me tell you, that job in itself may take him all day!

Here are photos of the nearly finished quilt studio.  You will notice that he knows me very well, based on the number of plugins he put in.  LOL  He also put them in the middle of the walls so I didn’t have to bend over to plug something in.  All in all, it’s come together very nicely and now we pray that all of my quilt stuff from my sewing room fits in it!

This is the back wall of the studio with the restroom on the right.  My shelves will go on the back wall and for the time being, that dresser will probably go in the restroom.  We added the restroom because my foster mother is more handicapped than I am so until she comes back, it really isn’t necessary for me as the studio is very close to our house and I can walk there, as needed.  The dresser will be our mailing station, to mail out fabric or quilted quilts.  That curtain hides a nice-sized loft, to hold the things I don’t need very often.

This is the left side of the studio.  The AC unit is actually for both AC and heat so I’ll be able to work in the studio whether it’s hot or cold outside.  The longarm will fit on part of this wall.  I also had my husband hang pegboard in three areas of the studio.  One over the longarm area, one over my sewing area and a smaller one in my foster mother’s nook.  It’ll be just lovely to have a place for everything and everything in its place!

This is my foster mother’s corner.  She likes being by a window – whereas I prefer to live like a mole.  LOL  We should be able to fit her chair, sewing machine and cutting table in this area when she comes back.

This is a shot of my foster mother’s nook and the door.  The curtain over this second loft is sagging but my MIL decided that once the longarm was in and the room had settled, we’d go back and cut that curtain so it was straight (and it really bugs me that it’s not straight!).IMG_2002

This is my sewing area in the studio.  My sewing table (to fit both my domestic machine and my embroidery machine) will go just to the right of that window.  My cutting table will be movable so I can either leave it in front of the window or move it beside my sewing station.

And there you have it, TaM’s Quilt Studio!  Will share more photos once we get the longarm set up and my sewing room in the house all moved.

No Room at the Inn

Quilt Therapy Posted on July 31, 2014 by TK HarrisonJuly 29, 2014

Normally, I wouldn’t share my sewing room mess with anyone.  But, these are desperate times!  My quilt studio should be finished this week – and not a moment too soon!  These photos will show you just how full my current sewing room in our house is:

My sewing machine is barely noticeable on my sewing table.

My shelves are overflowing and I have run out of room to store things under my cutting table.

Bolts of muslin in front of boxes and boxes and more boxes.

My mailing station, such as it is.

Don’t Use it, Don’t Need It – Gift it to Someone Who Will Use It!

Quilt Therapy Posted on June 4, 2014 by TK HarrisonJune 2, 2014

I was searching for some fabric on my overflowing fabric stash shelves and came across these two small samples I had made some time in the past.  I believe it was when I first received my AccuQuilt studio cutter and I wanted to play with the shapes of the dyes.

I emailed the lady in charge of our quilt group at our church, attaching these two photos, and asked her if she had any use for them.  I knew the ladies made larger quilts for their Lutheran World Relief projects as well as giving quilts to graduates…but wasn’t sure of who else they made quilts for and if they had any need for these 40 1/2″ squares.

Wouldn’t you know, she said absolutely – and anything else I came up with in my searching, regardless of whether it was the sizes of the above pieces or just single blocks.  And then I hung my head in shame…knowing that now I would feel compelled to go through those shelves to find more.

But, I did it…at least as far as I could  get it done as I couldn’t reach all of my shelves (oh yeah is the day that I am able to get into my quilt studio and be able to access whatever I needed, whenever I needed it)!

I came up with nearly a full paper sack of this-n-that to give to the quilters.  And when I went to pick up the kids from Sunday school on Sunday morning, I saw the quilt-lady-in-charge carrying that bag to her car.  Guess she wanted to see what I sent before sharing it with the rest of the ladies!

And as an added bonus, most of my shelves are now cleared of items I would not use again so when my studio is complete, I won’t have as much to cull as I would if I hadn’t found these first two samples!

Much Needed Mother’s Day Gift

Quilt Therapy Posted on May 14, 2014 by TK HarrisonMay 12, 2014

This is a photo of my thread holders currently in my sewing room:

IMG_1459

As you can see, there’s only ONE spot left for a spool of thread…and I already have that spool on my sewing table so these spool holders are completely full.

And for Mother’s Day?  My loving husband and children gifted me with another (much needed) spool holder!

IMG_1458

I warned my husband that he was not putting this up on my sewing room wall…it was going to be saved for when my quilt studio is done.  Not sure if that’s incentive enough for him to finish my quilt studio, but I hope so!

Quilt Studio Dream Design

Quilt Therapy Posted on March 31, 2014 by TK HarrisonMarch 31, 2014

My quilt studio still isn’t ready for action but I am impatiently anticipating and dreaming of the finished space.  All of the walls and ceiling will be white – I wanted a totally blank space so my fabric colors aren’t affected by any tinting in paint colors.  The floor tiles we chose are not quite white but pretty close.

So, time to put my mad designing skillz to the test.  I already have most of the furniture and appliances that will go into my studio, but it doesn’t hurt for a quilt girl to dream now does it?  Mind you, as a person with MS, I want everything on wheels (that lock and unlock) so that if I reach a point where I cannot walk very well, I can move items around to fit myself in a rolling desk chair or a wheelchair.

If I had unlimited funds, these are the items I would add to my studio to make it quiltastic:

Kangaroo & Joey Cabinet from Kangaroo Kabinets

Dingo Open Teak Cutting & Storage Cabinet

I would not use this as a cutting table as it’s too short for me.  However, it would make a great spot to put finished quilt blocks, waiting to be sewn together.

Tasmanian Height Adjustable Table

This is the table that would be used for cutting as it extends tall enough for my height.  Plus, the table top unlocks and rotates vertically for easier storage.  AND, by tossing a bit of batting over the top, this piece could also double as a design wall!

Impulse Reclina-Rocker® Recliner

Impulse Reclina-Rocker® Recliner

There is a little alcove with a window where my foster mother reserved as her special spot.  In that space, she needs a recliner, in case she wants to grab a quick nap.  The splash of color that this lounge chair would bring to the studio would be perfect!

Sandusky Heavy Duty NSF Certified Chrome 4-Shelf Wire Shelving - 86"H x 48"W x 24"D

Sandusky Heavy Duty NSF Certified Chrome 4-Shelf Wire Shelving – 86″H x 48″W x 24″D

I already have one of these shelf units and our plan is to purchase two more and then put casters on the legs.  The shelves would be placed side-by-side (by width) and with the casters, they can be moved back and forth for easy fabric access from either side.

Vero Floor Lamp

Vero Floor Lamp from OttLite

We have already decided to go with task lighting and not overall lighting, and with a couple of these OttLite floor lamps, mobile pure lighting is the name of the game!

Although this doesn’t totally outfit my studio, it does give me a great perspective on what would and wouldn’t work in the space I have.  And there are many items I already have in my current sewing room that can be re-used…such as open plastic baskets for the shelves, thread spool holders, ironing board, etc.  I am perfectly happy with these things, no matter where they will be placed.

What about you?  How would you design your quilt studio dream?
