Quilting with Nature

Quilt Therapy Posted on May 21, 2015 by TK HarrisonMay 18, 2015

Fabric colors reflect the creativity of the designer’s eye.  However, we do not always know what those colors are based on.  For example, if there’s a fabric line that takes its colors from a rock collection – what rocks?  Are they geographical rocks found only where the designer lives and/or works?  Precious stones?  We quilters just don’t know!

What we can do, though, is to use nature to dictate the colors of our quilts.  It’s a pretty simple process even if you believe you are challenged by computer programs.  Use an image program to ‘point to’ the colors you would like to use and then paste that color on a new blank or white image.  Save it on your computer with the photos or print it out so you have it when you go fabric shopping.

Here’s one that I found that is pretty cool.  This butterfly was no longer alive when one of our kids brought it in the house.  They loved the colors!  What they didn’t know was that the underside of the butterfly had a different pattern and different colors than the front!

Let’s create a quilted nature!

Chevron Quilt Block

Quilt Therapy Posted on May 7, 2015 by TK HarrisonMay 3, 2015

I have a Chevron quilt block, quilt block.  Does that make any sense?  🙂

Every time I think of the modern quilter’s love of using Chevron’s in quilts, all I see in my mind is this:

Am I the only one who is having visions of Charlie Brown’s shirt when looking at quilts and quilt projects that call for Chevrons?

Quilt Therapy Posted on March 30, 2015 by TK HarrisonMarch 29, 2015

I’d like to introduce you to my new website, Quilt Articles!  I got tired of searching page upon page in the search engines for articles relevant to what I wanted…so decided to just take the bull by the horns and create a website that listed articles that quilters can use to find exactly what they needed.QuiltArticlesLogo1

The website will be updated weekly, give all of us an opportunity access to the type of articles that interest quilters the most.

If you have an article that you feel would be a valuable contribution to the Quilt Articles website, feel free to leave a comment or submit your article link to me via the Quilt Articles website.  Come join me at Quilt Articles!

Quilting and Bread Making

Quilt Therapy Posted on March 9, 2015 by TK HarrisonMarch 9, 2015

I am a quilter.  My husband has become a bread maker.  When I compare the two crafts, they are not as different as one would think.

Quilting:

  • Choose or design a pattern
  • Choose fabric
  • Measure and cut out fabric
  • Piece blocks or the quilt top
  • Quilt the quilt top
  • Bind the quilt
  • Label the quilt
  • Use the quilt for some quilty love

Bread Making:

  • Choose or create a recipe
  • Choose the ingredients
  • Measure the ingredients
  • Combine the ingredients
  • Place bread in a baking dish
  • Score the top of the bread
  • Bake the bread
  • Cut the bread
  • Eat the bread for some yummy in your tummy love

Go ahead – make a quilt or make some bread.  Both bring different kinds of love but both are also loved!

Christmas Sewing Crafts

Quilt Therapy Posted on January 5, 2015 by TK HarrisonDecember 29, 2014

I chose not to tackle any large quilt projects to gift to anyone for this past Christmas because I just wasn’t ready to take on yet another deadline.  But, I did enjoy a little sewing and craft therapy to be gifted to others.

I made these for my daughters’ gifts to their teachers.  The tutorial I used is here.

These are fabric and felt fortune cookies which I gifted to a few people.  I used this tutorial here.

What type of sewing and/or quilting crafts did YOU make for Christmas gifts this year?
