Testing 123, Testing

Quilt Therapy Posted on February 10, 2014 by TK HarrisonFebruary 9, 2014

I am making a quilt for a virtual friend’s daughter who graduates from high school this year.  Once we picked out the fabrics and they were Mom-approved by my virtual friend Donna, I was anxious to start on this quilt.

Let me make it clear – this quilt will be ‘defined’ by the quilting.  Blocks and blocks will take care of the piecing but I want Meloney’s quilting to stand out.  I want the quilting to shine.  Here are the rows that I put together this evening:

Since this is a quick and easy pattern, I should be able to finish it in a few days!

Flashback Tuesday: Crop Circles

Quilt Therapy Posted on February 4, 2014 by TK HarrisonFebruary 3, 2014

There are many times I find, where the fabric is lovely on a quilt but the long-arm quilting “defines” the quilt and makes it even more special.  This is the case with this quilt image below. It is a basic layer cake (10″ squares of fabric) quilt…but, when my quilter put her magical spin on it, it totally made the quilt.  This was a quilt for my niece when she graduated from high school on 5/30/2009.  She has always been more involved in outside sports and fun than inside and she is not a girly-girl.  Hence, I chose this fabric because all of the outdoor colors are in the fabrics.  But, I could NOT have asked for a better long-arm quilt pattern than the crop circles – that totally screamed my niece (to me) and my quilter had no clue about her!

As I continue to say, I am a quilt designer and piecer, I consider myself advanced in those areas.  I leave the quilting up to my quilter as she always knows her craft better than I could ever imagine!

Flashback Tuesday: Prayer Shawl

Quilt Therapy Posted on January 28, 2014 by TK HarrisonJanuary 26, 2014

In 2009, we lost a very special lady.  But, our loss is His gain!

She was a nun earlier in life, and left the order to marry a pastor.  Pastor Jim and Ms. Stone were very special people to us.  My husband attended a men’s Bible study that Pastor Stone led for a few years.  Ms. Stone was battling dementia.

I still recall the Easter that they joined with our family.  Those memories are cherished.

But, this flashback is about the prayer shawl I made for Pastor Stone when his wife passed away.  I have not put the instructions to it up.  But, it is very simple to make with three cross blocks and two Jacob’s Ladder blocks.

Since Mrs. Stone was cremated, Pastor Stone wanted me to put the shawl in the narthex of our church with Mrs. Stone’s photos so folks attending the service would notice the photos because of the bright Texas Hill Country fabrics.

I have made a number of these prayer shawls and they are special to everyone who has received one.  I am just grateful that folks enjoy my quilted gifts to them.

Friday Funday: Who Can Grow the Biggest Cabbage?

Quilt Therapy Posted on January 10, 2014 by TK HarrisonJanuary 7, 2014

Our local elementary school works in conjunction with the local garden club to bring education and fun, through gardening, to the fifth and sixth grade classes.  I believe they have changed their schedule and only cater to the fifth graders now, but both of my younger children got to enjoy gardening for both grades.  Once the end of their time is reached, the kids earn a junior master gardener certificate.  Those instructional gardener days are priceless – leaving the kids with the knowledge and ability to grow their own food and bring it home to eat it!

Earlier this fall, my husband issued a challenge to our youngest son and daughter – who can grow the biggest cabbage?  Our son wasn’t interested in the competition (but he has helped maintain the garden around the produce), but that youngest daughter is full of the competitive gene and she rose to the challenge!

She and her dad planted 96 cabbage plants.  Yes, you heard that right – 96!  My husband makes his own sauerkraut and it’s in high demand in these parts, so he wanted enough cabbage to carry out his smelly delights.

As I went out to inspect the cabbage competition, I noticed something had been dining on the leaves.  Since these are completely organic, there’s not a lot to be done to keep the hungry bugs away – but he did inform me that the bugs only ate at the leaves and had not gotten to the cabbage heads.

This cabbage above?  That would be our 12-year-old daughter’s cabbage.  Her PhD (in an agricultural field) dad’s cabbages didn’t have big enough heads on them for me to photograph.  🙂

There is more than a month remaining in this contest….may the best cabbage grower reign!

Flashback Tuesday: Hart Bunny Quilted Wall Hanging

Quilt Therapy Posted on January 8, 2014 by TK HarrisonJanuary 7, 2014

I designed and made these Easter Bunny wall hangings in 2009.  They are absolutely adorable and instead of using them for wall hangings, I’ve been known to just use them as table toppers when we have our family Easter meal.  A fun and festive way to enjoy Easter!
