Margaret’s Star Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Squared Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
- Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
- Purple: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the Yellow 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
- Purple: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- Purple: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. Once these FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles are sewn together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Yellow 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Squared Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Purple 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Squared Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)

If you sew TWELVE (12) “Margaret’s Star Quilt Blocks” you’ll end up with the quilt top pictured above. The size will be 36″ x 48″ finished, 36 1/2″ x 48 1/2″ unfinished.
Margaret’s Star Variation Quilt Block
Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):
- Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- Green: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. When all FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles are sewn together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
- Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These will flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ square, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed when this quilt block is sewn together.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Green 3 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. When all FOUR (4) of these Half-Square Triangles are sewn together they’ll create the center of this quilt block.)
- White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. You’ll end up with FOUR (4) triangles. (These are flanked by the results of the Blue 3 7/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed when this quilt block is sewn together.)
