Gretchen's Star Quilt Block is a Free Pattern for a 12" quilt block at QuiltTherapy.com!

Gretchen’s Star Quilt Block

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Lt. Blue: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. (These are paired with the White 3″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. When sewn together they’ll also be the center of this quilt block).
  • Lt. Blue: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank ONE (1) end of the Lt. Blue
    1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the White 1 7/8″ x
    4 3/4″ rectangles.)
  • Lt. Blue: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ x
    4 3/4″ rectangles. They’re also paired with the results of the White 4 7/8″ squares.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Lt. Blue 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Lt. Blue 3″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. When sewn together they’ll also be the center of this quilt block).
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank ONE (1) end of the White
    1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the Lt. Blue 1 7/8″ x

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Lilac: Cut ONE (1) 2 1/2″ square. (This is the center of this quilt block. It’s flanked by the results of the White 3 1/4″ square which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Lilac: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. (These are paired with the White 2 7/8″ squares which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles. They’ll also be the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • Lilac: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank ONE (1) end of the Lilac
    1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles.)
  • Lilac: Cut TWO (2) 4 7/8″ squares. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles. (These triangles are paired with the White 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles.)
  • Lilac: Cut FOUR (4) 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. (These are paired with the White 1 7/8″ x 4 3/4″ rectangles. They’re also paired with the results of the White 4 7/8″ squares.)

Cutting Requirements for 12″ finished block (scant 1/4″ seam allowance):

  • Rust: Cut ONE (1) 4 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles. (These triangles will flank the White 3 1/2 square in the center of this quilt block. Which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • Yellow: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These Triangles are paired with the results of the Peach 4 1/4″ squares. When sewn together they’ll flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • Peach: Cut TWO (2) 4 1/4″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles per square. (FOUR (4) of these triangles are paired with the results of the Peach 4 1/4″ squares. Then they’ll flank the results of the White 7 1/4″ square. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese. All of these Peach triangles will also flank the results of the White 3 7/8″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) more Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/2″ square. (This is flanked by the results of the Rust 4 1/4″ square. Which will create ONE (1) Square in a Square.)
  • White: Cut FOUR (4) 3 1/2″ squares. (These are the FOUR (4) corners of this quilt block.)
  • White: Cut TWO (2) 3 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are flanked by the results of the Peach 4 1/4″ squares. Which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese.)
  • White: Cut ONE (1) 7 1/4″ square. Then cut the square diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles.   • Purple: Cut TWO (2) 2 7/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the results of the White 3 1/4″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Flying Geese, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Purple: Cut ONE (1) 3 1/4″ square. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, TWO (2) times. Will yield FOUR (4) triangles per square. (These triangles are paired with the White

  • Lt. Blue: Cut TWO (2) 4 3/8″ squares. On the back side of the squares draw a diagonal line, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. (These are paired with the Pink 4 3/8″ squares, which will create FOUR (4) Half-Square Triangles, as needed to sew this quilt block together.)
  • Pink: Cut TWO (2) 3 3/8″ squares. Then cut the squares diagonally, corner-to-corner, ONE (1) time. Will yield TWO (2) triangles per square.
