Easter Corsage to Last Forever!

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 24, 2012 by TK HarrisonApril 24, 2012

Kathryn Rister of Quilt Kits & Quarters gifted me with some kits to make these wonderful fabric flowers when I went to her retreat near Abilene, Texas last month:

She had given me three sizes of the flowers because I have three daughters.  I showed them to my girls, but they did not seem too interested in doing anything with them.  So, one evening while we were watching a movie, I got the kits out and put the flowers together.  They all loved them, and then (of course), were disappointed that I put them together instead of waiting for them to do it.  Figures!  hehe

Anyway, once done, we decided we would give one to their grandmother for an Easter corsage.

She LOVED it, and now she will have a fun fabric corsage for whatever occasion she wants to wear it!

Capturing the Quilt Love and Passion

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 19, 2012 by TK HarrisonApril 19, 2012

I have a husband who refuses to use Facebook.  He prefers to live off the grid and he feels if you are his friend, you will either email him or call him.  I allow our children to get a page when they turn 13, though their mother monitors their usage and will tell them who they can friend or not friend based on how that person behaves on Facebook.

I have a lot of family on Facebook, too.  Some care about me, some love me and some just want to monitor my activities.  I know that those in my extended family who were a part of my life before Facebook will always be a part of my life, and will always be there for me should I need it.  There are a few connections with other family members who may or may not be there for me, I do not know because I have not had the desire to ask them for much beyond prayers.  There are some I have renewed relationships with because of Facebook, and those I *know* will stand by me through thick and thin, and that new love and our relationships have only gotten better over the years.  Prayers are a part of my daily existance, so they are very much appreciated from whomever wants to send them up – and I pray for my family more than most of them know.

But, I have to tell you – it is one of the best ways to capture the quilt love and passion that only those of us who are truly addicted inspired to share friendships, talents, inspriation and a common ground with people from all over the world.  It is a place I can go to when I am looking for a shoulder to lean on or to help lift others up.  We have prayer warriors, daily prayer time and many live the same type of God-loving life that my own family lives.  We send cards to each other when they are sick.  We wish each other Happy Birthday.  We share photos of our families and milestones.  I have never had a quilt friend on Facebook that isn’t willing to jump in and help me if I need it, and visa versa.  Quilting binds our love and passion for the art together, much as the stitches of our seams bind a quilt together.

I just wanted to take this chance to thank those who are truly friends with me on Facebook (that encompasses family and friends – because you do have to be a friend to truly get the benefits of being a family when you were raised as I was in so many foster homes.  To me, holding or lifting others up is a way of life – and when I am in need, I know I can count on many in my Facebook friendship circle to do the same.  It’s important for any soul to have love – I have that with my own husband, children and our respective close family members.  But, it’s an unexpected joy to find so much virtual love – especially for me since we have no landline and our cell phones do not work in the hills we live in.  Quilt friends make me want to be a better person, a better friend and a better quilter.  They inspire me to want to leave a legacy of my life behind through the quilting that I do.  They love and are loved….one quilted heart at a time.

Quilt Inspiration from Food

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 17, 2012 by TK HarrisonApril 17, 2012

The colors that come together on a dinner plate are sometimes just too much fun to imagine being combined in a quilt.  Food is life, and quilt therapy comes from all aspects of life.  Can you see some quilt colors in these meals, as I do?

Calling All Quilt Therapy Fabric Angels

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 16, 2012 by TK HarrisonApril 16, 2012

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I think the movie “Pay it Forward” is one of the best movies for kids and adults to really get others to understand that one small act of kindness from you can have compound effects on others.  It creates a snowball effect, picking up other nice things as it rolls down the hill.  I have been on both ends of the kindness chain, and it feels so very good to be able to give back when you are able to, and to receive when you need it.  And I know that my children have benefited because they will go out of their way to help others without even asking us if they can.

If you think about it and pay it forward, it makes for a life and not an existance.

At this time, I have a virtual quilt friend in need.  She lives on a fixed income and is very responsible with her money, making sure those she owes are paid before ever using what is left of her disposable income for quilt fabric or supplies.  She has a heart of gold and I have no doubt that if I needed something, she would help me find a way to get it.

But, right now SHE needs something, and I will do what I can to help her – because those of us who truly find sanity in quilt therapy will totally understand the desire to take some scraps of fabric to make something beautiful for someone else.  Nearly all of the quilts I have seen photos of that she has made, she donates.  If she needs some extra funds to pay for an unexpected expense, she will sell a quilt to pay for it.  Waste not want not is a way of life for her.

So, I am asking if any of you have quilt fabric you are willing to send to her?  One fat quarter, one small box of fabric – anything to help her use her quilting skills to make her feel useful and have the pleasure of some more quilt therapy.  If so, please leave a message in the comments and I will privately email you her mailing address.  And I personally thank any Quilt Therapy Fabric Angels for helping out a quilt friend in need.
