Another Generation to Carry on the (Frustrating) Household Traditions

Quilt Therapy Posted on May 12, 2014 by TK HarrisonMay 11, 2014

Over the weekend, my husband and three younger kids went to help pack up and move our eldest daughter home for the summer from her college dorm room.  As I got my lunch prepared, I went to get a glass of milk for my lunch.

Yeah…this is how much milk my kids left me:

Now, I vaguely remember my aunt getting frustrated with me a few times in my youth.  The reason why?  Because I’d leave about this much milk in a jug or would not take the time to replace the toilet paper roll in my bathroom.  I’d just pull out a new roll and use it without putting it on the roll.  You know, where it was supposed to be!

Guess what?  Without any prompting by me, my children are carrying on those very frustrating traditions.  If I told my aunt, I’m sure she would smile and remind me I was the exact same way growing up.

And I would do my best impression of rolling my (formerly) teenage eyes, give her a great bit (formerly) teenage sigh and then turn around and go back to my room.  Without fixing a darned thing.  Ah yes, I am feeling her frustrations just about now and wondering which teenager, in our house, would be the next one to roll their eyes at me, sigh and then go hide in their bedroom.

Special Quilting on a Military Veteran’s Quilt

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 25, 2014 by TK HarrisonApril 20, 2014

When I give my longarm quilter a quilt, I rarely ask for her to do a pattern.  She is the expert and she quilts my quilts with love.  I did ask for stars to be used when quilting this special Military Veteran’s quilt.  But, Meloney went way further and quilted the quilt with both stars and a little bit of micro-quilting where I had placed raw edge applique.  I am sure the recipient of this quilt will treasure it, in part because it is made especially for him and in part because of the beautiful quilting Meloney has done.

THIS is What MY Quilting is All About: A Memory Quilt

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 14, 2014 by TK HarrisonApril 14, 2014

You have literally watched me build a very special memory quilt through this blog.  The latest post (and finished quilt image) can be seen here.

DDMLabel

This is the digitized image of the label that was put on the quilt.

And this is a photo of my friend reading the label:

And THIS is exactly why I make such memory quilts.  The happy tears, the stroking of the quilt, the remembrance of what each fabric was used for or when it was purchased…and the absolute pure (and raw) feelings of having that little piece of a quilted memorial of a loved one:

Quilting for Memories

Quilt Therapy Posted on March 24, 2014 by TK HarrisonMarch 23, 2014

I have written about this quilt a few times before…here and here.  And will have one more post about it once I finish whip-stitching the binding to the back of the quilt.  But, this whole quilt-making process deserves attention.  Each part of the process is enjoyable to me and as I hand-stitch the binding to the back of the quilt, I pray for the recipient.  Bingo!  Multitasking at it’s best!

Meloney gave me the completed quilt last week and I have been savoring the near-final completion to get the binding done.  But, I cannot pass up the beautiful cabbage roses that Meloney quilted on the quilt:

And here is a bit more of the top of the quilt, with the quilting completed:

One very special quilt for a very special local lady.  The memory quilt is embodies LOVE.  I know my friend will love and cherish it for many years to come.
