Quilted Lovies Website Launch

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 21, 2013 by TK HarrisonOctober 21, 2013

Because of the amazing response when I first talked on Facebook about the Quilted Lovies I was making for friends and family members, I have decided to devote and entire website to my precious Lovies.  But, it’s not just MY Lovies – I want the Lovie world to grow and grow!  So, to my fellow quilters, I would like to invite you to join the Lovie Quilted Gifting Spirit!  Make a Lovie and share a photo or two with me so I can share the photos online.  There are even free patterns for two of the Lovies I have made with more patterns in the works.

Let’s sew and quilt to our heart’s content while we spread Quilted Lovies around the world!

Equal Opportunity Quilter

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 15, 2013 by TK HarrisonOctober 15, 2013

You may recall that earlier this summer, I made a t-shirt quilt that was made with a whole lot of maroon and white fabric, from one of the two main universities in Texas.  If you want a refresher on that quilt, you can search “t-shirt” (no quotes) in the search box on this blog.

I was asked a couple of weeks ago to put together a quilt for a local business owner who is pregnant.  I know the recipient’s mother and love her to pieces.  Normally, with my MS so out of control these days, I would never have taken on a project that had such a quick deadline…but, because I care for the lady who ordered it and I care for the Mom of the intended, I said I would do it.

This quilt was to be from clothes from the recipient’s father, who passed away earlier this year.  When I finally got the clothes, I was perplexed at what to do with them.  There were two shirts, one pair of khaki pants and a number of golf towels in the bag.  HUH?

I had an MRI in the city on Friday and we had a bit of spare time before we picked up our daughter for the weekend so we stopped at a fabric store so I could pick up some fabric to use on the baby quilt.  Based on the colors of the quilt I made earlier this year, this time, the fabric was from the other major university in Texas – I am nothing but an equal opportunity quilter!

I spent the weekend trying to figure out how I was going to make this quilt, since the fabrics were all different.  I put together the center of the quilt…then added a bit more…then contemplated the universe how I was going to incorporate the golf towels into the quilt.  Finally, on Sunday evening, it hit me…and I went forth and conquered!  Monday evening, I completed the baby quilt top and it’s ready for the quilter.

Whew, made it by the deadline without stressing myself and making my MS worse!

This Little Light of Mine…I’m Gonna Let it Shine!

Quilt Therapy Posted on September 24, 2013 by TK HarrisonSeptember 24, 2013

Earlier this year, when my (third) foster mother was wintering with us, we took a trip to that big box store (initials WM) to pick up some incidentals for my foster mother to have quilt projects to work on while she was staying with us.  On the end of one of the aisles was a huge display of Ott Light Sewing Caddy’s:

ott caddy

The price on these was $10 – and I *knew* the quality and brand was outstanding, so I suggested my foster mother get for when she sits in the evenings and likes to do hand-work.  I *knew* that price could not be beat anywhere…and after asking about it to my quilty friends on Facebook, the wholesale cost alone was at least $30, if not $40 in some places.  After my foster mother snagged one up, we went back a few days later and I picked up two more.  I had no big intentions on who they would go to, only that the cost could not be beat anywhere.  If I had had unlimited funds, I would have bought a shopping cart full of them!  One of my quilty friends even went a step further and called her local big box store and he called ours and was told they were Christmas oversights and were selling them at that amazingly low price just to get them sold.

Well, one of them went to my mother-in-law as her Easter basket earlier this year – and she has it all set up next to the chair that she likes to do hand-work in later in the evenings…and she absolutely loves it.  My foster mother loved hers so much, she took it home with her!

That left me with one left.  It sat in the box for the longest of times because I just had not come across someone to gift it to.

Then, one evening, I was needing to put the binding on a quilt and could NOT seem to get enough light on the subject, regardless of where I sat in the living room.  Then the light bulb (pun intended) went off in my head that I had the answer right in my sewing room – all I had to do was unpack it and fill it up with what I needed to whip-stitch the binding on a quilt!

Hence, I gifted myself with the final Ott Light Sewing Caddy!

And when my foster mother comes back, she can use mine and not have to travel with hers…but, leave it safe and full of all of her fun things until she returns to her summer home!

Birthday Blessings: A Pincushion

Quilt Therapy Posted on September 5, 2013 by TK HarrisonSeptember 2, 2013

Friday, August 23rd was my last birthday before I reach the big 5-0.  We had taken my daughter to college to unload all of her dorm necessities and then shopped for her dorm refrigerator and microwave.  I needed a break, at that point, so we locked everything up and went and had lunch.

My lovely quilter, Meloney, met us at the restaurant so I could give her a quilt that I needed quilted.  We had visited via email that morning and then, when I went home to get ready to head to the big city, Meloney got on Facebook and saw that it was my birthday.

She couldn’t let such a milestone and potential celebration go without gifting me with something special.  She made this pincushion while her family was vacationing in Hawaii last year – and I feel special that she gifted it to me!

Good friends are hard to come by – but, I know, without a doubt, that Meloney is just that – a friend, a collaborator and a God-loving honest woman…who made sure my birthday didn’t go unnoticed!

Quilted Lovies (continued)

Quilt Therapy Posted on September 4, 2013 by TK HarrisonSeptember 2, 2013

I mentioned here about making the quilted Lovies for my second cousin’s three children.  Over the long weekend, I totally surprised myself (and my family) by not only piecing the tops of each of the Lovies, I even quilted them!

I posted a photo of each of them to my cousin so she could decide which child received which Lovie and her response was very special to me:

They are beautiful…words cannot express my gratitude.

Here’s a photo of each of the three Lovies made from fabrics that my cousin had chosen as “her colors” before she passed away:

Each are about 28″ square and they are perfect as a special memory for a loved one.  If I didn’t have the fabric that my cousin had already chosen, I would have asked the family if I could make them out of my cousin’s clothes.

All that’s left is whip-stitching the binding to the back of the Lovies and adding my tag!  I know, without a doubt, that these Lovies will be treasured by both my second cousin and her children.
