Don’t Use it, Don’t Need It – Gift it to Someone Who Will Use It!

Quilt Therapy Posted on June 4, 2014 by TK HarrisonJune 2, 2014

I was searching for some fabric on my overflowing fabric stash shelves and came across these two small samples I had made some time in the past.  I believe it was when I first received my AccuQuilt studio cutter and I wanted to play with the shapes of the dyes.

I emailed the lady in charge of our quilt group at our church, attaching these two photos, and asked her if she had any use for them.  I knew the ladies made larger quilts for their Lutheran World Relief projects as well as giving quilts to graduates…but wasn’t sure of who else they made quilts for and if they had any need for these 40 1/2″ squares.

Wouldn’t you know, she said absolutely – and anything else I came up with in my searching, regardless of whether it was the sizes of the above pieces or just single blocks.  And then I hung my head in shame…knowing that now I would feel compelled to go through those shelves to find more.

But, I did it…at least as far as I could  get it done as I couldn’t reach all of my shelves (oh yeah is the day that I am able to get into my quilt studio and be able to access whatever I needed, whenever I needed it)!

I came up with nearly a full paper sack of this-n-that to give to the quilters.  And when I went to pick up the kids from Sunday school on Sunday morning, I saw the quilt-lady-in-charge carrying that bag to her car.  Guess she wanted to see what I sent before sharing it with the rest of the ladies!

And as an added bonus, most of my shelves are now cleared of items I would not use again so when my studio is complete, I won’t have as much to cull as I would if I hadn’t found these first two samples!

Flashback Tuesday: “I Believe” Card Holder

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 15, 2014 by TK HarrisonApril 15, 2014

I know, I know…please don’t grouse about me putting up Christmas quilt projects before Easter!  But, for quilters, sometimes we have to start to at least think ahead of things to put on our Christmas to-do lists!

This pattern was designed and published for my BOMquilts.com 2010’s annual “Christmas in July”.  You don’t have to use the same fabrics that were available then, you can just use any fabrics that have a panel with words on it.  It doesn’t even have to be a Christmas wall hanging – you could make it a birthday wall hanging for all of the birthday cards you or someone in your house may amass during their birthdays!

I-Believe-Card-Holder

This is a very quick pattern to make and quilt on any domestic sewing machine that has a quilting foot.  Click Here for the fabric requirements and free pattern!

Stash Fabric Galore!

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 2, 2014 by TK HarrisonApril 2, 2014

Over the weekend, I had an opportunity to pick up additional fabric for my stash.  First, let me explain something.  I never had a stash before.  Not a ‘real’ one.  I’ve always purchased the fabric I needed for personal projects and then gave the remainder of the fabric away.  When I started designing and piecing quilt projects for quilt shops, again, I’d use the fabric I needed for that project and would give the leftovers away to someone who was low on money but high on using every scrap of fabric they received.  The only fabrics that I saved were those that were special to me – such as the Texas Hill Country fabric lines that Moda sold a few years back.  Everything else?  Gone.

Until.

My dream quilt studio was in the planning stages.  And since then, I have been hoarding not only the fabrics I need on a regular basis…but, also building up my stash with some yardage and not just the fat quarter bundles that I usually have leftovers of.

Hence, an increase in my fabric stash this past weekend.  Behold!

Fabic Book or Quilted Wall Hanging?

Quilt Therapy Posted on March 5, 2014 by TK HarrisonMarch 2, 2014

Linda at AbbiMays.com sent me a lovely box filled with fabric – some of it for our lovely quilters at church and some for me!  This is something I salvaged from her stash-busting:

I am thinking I will not make this into a book but rather a wall hanging.  I cannot wait to get it ready – patience young quilting grasshopper, patience.  But if I do make this fabric into a quilt, I have found a great site to use as a reference for building such a fabric book.

What do YOU do with fabric book panels?  Make a wall hanging or a quilted book?

Stash Busting for a Gift

Quilt Therapy Posted on March 4, 2014 by TK HarrisonMarch 2, 2014

Choosing fabric from my stash to match a Jelly’s roll that found its way into my shopping cart last week.  Putting together some birthday gifts for a special person.  Her favorite color is blue so this Jelly and the accompanying fabric should give her something to do when she’s stuck inside because of the weather!

Is it called re-gifting when I give someone a special gift from my stash?
