Always a Mom with a Quilted Heart

Quilt Therapy Posted on November 14, 2013 by TK HarrisonNovember 12, 2013

A month or so ago, I received a very special gift from someone I do not know.  I had made some Lovies for the children that my husband, a lay minister, had baptized.  I also made a couple of extras for future baptisms (whether my husband performs them or not).

A week or two later, a lovely woman from his congregation sent me a card of thanks, saying that it took a special wife to support her husband’s congregation, even if that wife was not regularly participating in the services.  With that card was a gift card.  Both my husband and I were shocked to see how much this lovely lady had bestowed upon me.  What an amazing gift!

I put the card in my wallet, praying and talking to my family about how I should spend it.  Yes, there’s always bills to pay and groceries to purchase but my husband truly wanted me to use the card for ME, as that’s what the gift giver had requested.

This past weekend, I had figured out what I needed and went to purchase those clothing items.  But, I certainly didn’t spend as much money on my purchases as was available with the gift card.

Thus, the MOM in me felt that once I had purchased what I needed, the balance should be spent on our children for things they needed.  One daughter needed a dress, some sandals as well as some everyday tennis shoes.  Son needed some socks and under-things.  Another daughter really did not have any needs but she wanted some hair bows, so that’s what she got.  Oldest daughter, away at college, needed a few groceries.  All of these gifts were possible because of one very lovely lady.

No matter what gifts I receive, I always remember that I am a MOM first.  Some of the gifts I do keep for myself (eBook cards or quilt shop cards) but most other gifts of money or gift cards are spent on my children first.

Are YOU the same way, if you are a MOM?

Underwater Quilting

Quilt Therapy Posted on November 4, 2013 by TK HarrisonNovember 4, 2013

Do you ever have so many quilt projects going on at one time that you can’t seem to focus on any ONE of them because you’re thinking about your ever-growing list of other projects that need attention, too?  I found myself in that exact situation this past weekend – *needing* to work on one project but thinking about all of the other projects I have lying around in my sewing room.  I could NOT focus.  I did not meet my weekend goals of at least completing a big project so I could work on the other projects.  I occasionally feel like I’m drowning in quilt projects – in a good way, with my scuba gear on 🙂

Perhaps you’d like to peek in my sewing room at the projects:

This is the project I need to finish ASAP – a two-sided t-shirt quilt.

This box is chock full of shirts & sweatshirts for my next t-shirt quilt.

Two of my children are getting confirmed this month, so these are their stoles that need pressing and embellishing.

This is the cut-out fabric for a tote bag exchange that is not required to be finished until March 2014 but it’s such a fun & quick pattern that I want to make it now!

This is the cut-out fabric for another tote bag, except this one is for me and my iPad.

This is one of two Quilted Lovies in progress.

And here we have the retro fabric to bind an antique quilt for a cousin – just waiting for me to get to it.

And without sharing the photos, I also have a lap quilt and a baby quilt that need the binding attached so I can send them on their way to their intended recipients.

Whew, just listing all of these quilt projects out makes me tired…and it certainly hasn’t gained me any more motivation to work on them.  Guess I’ll keep plugging away until that oft-hiding quilt mojo returns!

How many projects to YOU have going on at one time?

Quilted Lovies Website Launch

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 21, 2013 by TK HarrisonOctober 21, 2013

Because of the amazing response when I first talked on Facebook about the Quilted Lovies I was making for friends and family members, I have decided to devote and entire website to my precious Lovies.  But, it’s not just MY Lovies – I want the Lovie world to grow and grow!  So, to my fellow quilters, I would like to invite you to join the Lovie Quilted Gifting Spirit!  Make a Lovie and share a photo or two with me so I can share the photos online.  There are even free patterns for two of the Lovies I have made with more patterns in the works.

Let’s sew and quilt to our heart’s content while we spread Quilted Lovies around the world!
