Flashback Tuesday: Crazy Quilted Heart Keepsake from BOMquilts.com

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 7, 2014 by TK HarrisonOctober 5, 2014

Of all of the free quilt patterns and free quilt projects I’ve designed over the past 10 years, my Crazy Quilted Heart Keepsake has been the most popular and received the most comments.  There’s a touching story behind it and it was gifted to a dear friend who has been in good health since I gifted her with this crazy heart of ours.  We are so very grateful that she is still a dear friend and we love her and her family to pieces.  You can click on the photograph or on the link below it to obtain the free pattern from BOMquilts.com.

Baking Mania!

Quilt Therapy Posted on September 11, 2014 by TK HarrisonSeptember 10, 2014

My husband is the baker in our family.  He is constantly trying to perfect his technique to be able to bake the best loaf of bread possible.  I’d say he has not only achieved that, but he also made a delicious pan of cinnamon rolls and some delicious cream cheese icing, too!

A No Quilt Gift 50th Birthday

Quilt Therapy Posted on September 4, 2014 by TK HarrisonSeptember 2, 2014

I turned 50 a couple of weeks ago.  Perhaps I’ll finally be considered wise – by most everyone except my kids.  LOL  I have always preferred a very subtle and low-key birthday.  Not a big party person, more so now than ever before because of my MS blessing.

I rarely ask for much though this year I did have two requests and both of them were gifted to me.  I wanted a Boy Scout Mother’s necklace.  In the world of Boy Scouting, when your child achieves a rank advancement, the mother is also gifted with a pin for their son’s accomplishment.  I have two ribbons, one from our son’s Cub Scout advancements and one from our son’s Boy Scout advancements.  Unfortunately, the ribbons have some pretty thick clasps on the back and they put holes in my shirts.  So, I wanted a Mother’s necklace so I didn’t ruin anymore shirts.  Because I made my request late, my husband ordered it online and it should be in the mail this coming week.

The second gift request was a new wrist tape dispenser.  My youngest daughter used mine and accidentally broke it.  I love those wrist dispensers…even though the tape refills cost a lot more cost than just buying rolls of tape.  But, instead of one tape dispenser, I received two of them!  Now I can keep one in my studio and one in our wrapping paper holder.

And then I received a very unexpected gift – one that I will use often and enjoy:

My MIL gifted me with a chair for our deck and a cushion to go with it!  I enjoy sitting outside, watching the kids or the chickens or the dogs or even just the sunsets.  Something I would have never bought for myself but it certainly was needed and appreciated!

I felt really bad for my kids because I had a couple of very bad MS days, to the point that I couldn’t walk without assistance.  And one of those days was my birthday.

There were gifts of money and gifts of cards, too.  But, I must say…having my family together for my half-century mark was the best part of having a birthday.  Well, the brownies were right up there, too!

These Hills are Alive…with the Smell of Herbs!

Quilt Therapy Posted on August 25, 2014 by TK HarrisonAugust 25, 2014

My husband planted some beautiful herbs last year.  They are beautiful because they are annuals and as long as we water them, don’t let them go to seed and the Texas heat doesn’t kill them…they will come back year after year.  LOVE me that kind of gardening!  Not to mention that we can either freeze some of them (basil frozen, check) or dry some of them in the food dehydrator.  So I can have fresh, home-grown, organic herbs whenever I cook…or hubby cooks.

Here’s some of my beautiful herbs:

A word of warning…do NOT plant chives if you have free range turkeys.  Within the first month of having planted chives, the two Tom turkeys we have ate the chives down to the roots!  Really chapped my khaki’s because that was one of the few items I would have cooked with most often!

The Calm Before the Storm

Quilt Therapy Posted on August 21, 2014 by TK HarrisonAugust 20, 2014

School starts next Monday for three of my kids, Wednesday for our oldest who is in college.  But, I have been taking this week as the calm before the storm.  It’s not really working…my husband had had to drop his daily plans to fix a number of things this week, so he has been at a slow simmer for a few days…our oldest daughter is planning and packing and trying to organize her move to her dorm when it’s virtually impossible to do so as her previous year’s stuff is spread from her room, throughout the house and even up in the barn…our son could care less, he is ready to begin his classes whenever it’s time…and our two daughters are both ready and not ready to return to the daily grind.

Tonight, we have to attend their school’s “Meet the Teacher” night, where we will meet all of the new coaches teachers, and there are a lot of them.  Over a dozen teachers in our small public school have either retired, not had their contracts renewed, found better jobs elsewhere or left just because they could do better elsewhere.

That little jab at coaches teachers is not a joke.  For nearly EVERY. SINGLE. POSITION. ANNOUNCEMENT the school put on their website, they were looking for coaches FIRST and then, well maybe if they were state certified to teach a close-enough subject matter, they may be considered.  For a school that CLAIMS to always put academics first, it really chaps my khaki’s about how those positions were advertised.

So, since there are many things that frustrate and aggravate me about our local school…I am trying to treat this week as the calm before the storm.  My husband has one online class this year, too, and it’s on Mondays – it runs from 4 pm through 6 pm.  Which means I have to shorten my nap time to be able to pick our daughters up from the bus stop as well as get our son moving so he can finish his school work before he has to leave for Scouts 15 minutes after hubby finishes with his online class.  Oy.

The photo above.  It’s my calm before the storm.
