Graduation and Eagle Scout Quilt

Quilt Therapy Posted on June 1, 2011 by TK HarrisonJune 1, 2011

I’ve spoke before about the two friends that my husband has that he’s known since they were in Boy Scouts together in Jr. High school.  I find it hilarious that DH is older than the other two, yet he has the youngest kids.  Sam has two daughters who are already grown up and out of the house, one married and one finishing her degree and getting married in a couple of years.  David has a son who is a senior in the Corp at a popular Texas college that likes maroon and white.  His younger son graduated from high school last weekend and is heading to that popular Texas college this fall.

We went to the graduation party for David’s youngest son on Sunday, and I hadn’t even prepared a gift for him <shame>!  I knew I had to make him a quilt because I’d made his older brother one, but I hadn’t taken the time to make it.  So, I sent the hubster and kids off to church and got busy.

I ended up with a quilt top that David’s son loved.  It’s very basic (he is a guy!), but it says a lot by way of his accomplishments this year.  Not only did he graduate from high school, but he also earned his Eagle Scout rank.  I wanted to encompass both achievements (kill two birds with one stone …. errrr, gift), so I made the quilt blocks basic guy colors and I made the raw-edge applique name and year out of official Boy Scout fabric.  My husband loved it, and so did the graduate/Eagle Scout!

We’re Still One of a Kind Working on our Full House

Quilt Therapy Posted on May 16, 2011 by TK HarrisonMay 16, 2011

Today, my husband and I celebrate our 19th wedding anniversary.  Who would have thunk it?!  I have been married to him longer than I lived with my parents, longer than I lived in foster homes and even longer than I remained single before marriage.  I think that means I’m stuck with him as he’s stuck with me!

He got me a gift certificate to buy books for my Nook and I got him a gift certificate to buy beer making kits.  lol  We’re way past the traditional “paper, gold, diamonds” stage – actually, I don’t think we’ve ever followed those rules!

Here is a photo from our wedding day.  It’s not easy to see, but my wedding dress was custom made (and not traditional) in a very pale pink color – I still have it but I doubt even half of my body would fit in it these days.  hehe

Easter Celebration

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 26, 2011 by TK HarrisonApril 25, 2011

When we celebrate in church, we do it up right!  Our two youngest kids danced with streamers during one of the songs on Easter Sunday, and in the middle of their song, they threw balloons out into the congregation so everyone could celebrate with us!  It’s one thing for the folks to watch and enjoy the kids’ dancing, but quite another when you have them participate with you!

Our oldest daughter once again had some of her art featured at a local K-12 exhibit:

“The Song of Bernadette”

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 13, 2011 by TK HarrisonApril 13, 2011

DD#1 performed in their school’s one act play (OAP) these past few months.  Their play advanced at Zone but did not advance at Districts.  Last year, the school’s OAP cast won state, so it was a bit disappointing to the cast and crew that they did not advance.  To this mom, it had more to do with the subject matter (religious – and in our Bible Belt part of the south, Catholic to boot!) of the play more than the performance.  Sad but true – have to be careful with what message you allow the children to ACT out in a public school setting!  The ironic thing about this is that two of the cast members are children of a local Methodist pastor, and HE had no problem with his daughter’s wearing habits and ACTING as nuns.

(Can you tell the subject matter irritates me a touch?!)

Anyway, our daughter played two parts in the play, and we thought she did a great job.  The first was a school girl, giddy and girlie.  The second was a domineering aunt – quite fitting for a firstborn daughter!  She did a fabulous job with both of her parts and we are very proud of her.

She also cut out and painted the “mock rocks” on the set, and I think she enjoyed that as much as she enjoying acting in the play!

She really liked this costume, too – said it made her look like she had a hiney since genetics didn’t!  🙂
