A Quilted Memorial for George Ann

Quilt Therapy Posted on July 11, 2013 by TK HarrisonJuly 10, 2013

A very dear friend lost her very short battle with leukemia a couple of nights ago.  She was admitted to the hospital the first week of June and never made it out.  My quilted heart definitely has another seam added to it.

George Ann and I met at our local quilt group meetings.  Her mother had been coming for some time but George Ann didn’t really take to quilting until she retired from her job a few years ago.  Once she was hooked, it was all over but the sewing!

George Ann went with me to spread some quilted cheer to a retreat that Kathryn Rister had near Abilene, Texas last April.  I’m pretty sure we acted like a couple of teenagers, talking the entire way up and back.  We instantly found a friendship and it grew from there.

She saw beauty in nature just as much as she saw beauty in living and in people.  On our way to the retreat, we had to stop by the side of the road to take some photos of a stunning bluebonnet patch of flowers:

I am guessing that anyone who came into contact with George Ann found a friend in her.  She was so very likeable and loveable!  And her love of God and all of His creation was so deeply embedded in her heart.  We talked of Bible verses as much as we did about each others’ lives, families and our love of quilting.

On the quilting front, she picked up on it like she’d been doing it her whole life.  She occasionally asked me questions but her momma and at least one of her sisters quilted, too, so I’m sure they helped her way more than I did.  I taught George Ann how to make string quilts and she absolutely LOVED the idea and asked me to start saving my strings for her.  To this day, I still have a “George Ann Strings” bag near my cutting table:

I took a photo of the quilt I was working on last night, I realized I had just witnessed another God moment – I was making a baby quilt out of Texas A&M fabric and George Ann had (at some point over the last couple of years) told me that they were ‘partial to the Aggies’.

When I sent out a plea at Christmas to any of my local friends, asking the to help me trim our Christmas tree – George Ann and her momma were at my doorstep (along with a lovely neighbor) within the hour – even though they had more pressing things on their agenda, a friend is a friend and she was all that and a bolt of fabric!

I also uncovered my super-secret angel on Earth.  Ever since my MS diagnosis, I have received an anonymous card with $20 in it, in the mail at the beginning of each month.  Without fail.  And it always came at a time when I needed it most – for gas in the auto, medications, money for the kids, etc.  This month, I did not receive a card…which opened my eyes to the fact that my super-secret angel on Earth is now an Angel in His heavenly Kingdom.

My dear George Ann…I will miss you so very much.  Your zest for life helped she me that my attitude for living with MS could be a positive experience.  Your love of people helped me see how much friends and family are truly the most precious things we have and hold dear, outside our faith and love in our Savior.  Your smile was infectious.  And I will continue to save my strings and selvedges in hopes that I can share a little something with the next quilted heart angel you may send in my direction.

Love without ceasing, pray without ceasing and keep your sewing machine humming in heaven!

Happy 4th of July!

Quilt Therapy Posted on July 4, 2013 by TK HarrisonJuly 3, 2013

Old quilt patterns never die – they just sit in your sewing room until you uncover them and find yourself with a compulsion to complete them.  This one I unearthed from my 2007 block of the month named “TT Calendar Quilt“.  I had pieced the squares and blocks and even put it all together – except the quilting.  Unfortunately, we were living in the camper at the time and sewing space was extremely limited so I didn’t get to complete a lot of the blocks and found a treasure trove of them in my files!

July450

Get your quilting groove on and piece this delicious set of July blocks – took me less than 30 minutes to quilt it and I have no clue how much time it took me to put the blocks and squares completed.

Quilt On!

Yet Another Quilt with Many Blessings for the Graduate

Quilt Therapy Posted on May 31, 2013 by TK HarrisonMay 30, 2013

My husband has been a lay minister for a church down in Alice, Texas for more than six months.  They REALLY like him, especially the little elderly ladies.  They are all cute and very lovely to myself and our kids, the few times we’ve gone down with hubby.  Alice is about four hours southeast of us, so it’s quite a drive on a Saturday evening and hubby making the return trip home on Sunday evening – tires him out, that’s for sure!  And the ladies spoil him with home-baked goodies.  Some he actually brings home to share and I suspect, some he eats all by himself while he’s down at their parsonage and church.

And it’s not just my husband who they are so happy with, but they’ve basically adopted our kids, too!  They know most of their names and ply them with treats (both edible and things like puzzles).  It’s truly become a second home-church for our family – though we will retain our home church status until further down the road.

This past Sunday, they had a graduate celebration and they included our oldest daughter in their celebration.  Not only did she get a quilt from our home church, now she has another from the wonderful ladies at the church in Alice!

She has been sleeping with this one because it’s all fluffy and she likes that.  But, you can bet she’ll have both of her quilts adorning her bed when she heads to the dorms in August!

As for my first child graduating high school?  I am playing the ostrich and sticking my head in the sand…or, better yet, taking a queue from my children by turning on my iTunes, setting my music to an eardrum pounding level and plugging my ears up with my earbuds.  Not gonna take this one easily…though, I am betting as each of our other three children reach this adult-like stage in their lives, I will be ready to boot that last one out the door and change the locks!

Christmas Continues!

Quilt Therapy Posted on January 30, 2013 by TK HarrisonJanuary 30, 2013

As many of you know, my (third) foster mother (FM) has come to winter with us for a couple of months to escape some of the winter in Iowa.  Before Christmas, I told her we were having a homemade Christmas just for her when she arrived – beats sending huge packages through the mail plus, we all wanted to see her reaction to our homemade gifts.

In turn, she did some “closet shopping” – she went through her closet to find things that each of us would like and brought them.  What a great way to give gifts that have special meanings to both the giver and the receiver!

I was so busy watching and listening to the gifts our family received that I didn’t get photos of each one of the kids.  Our youngest daughter received a book about a girl that was published in 1909.  I’m sure my FM didn’t realize the significance of that year but both my maternal grandfather and my husband’s paternal grandmother were born in ‘naught nine’.

The son-man received my FM’s Boundary Waters tackle box.  The Boundary Waters are in northern Minnesota.  When I lived with these foster parents, we took three trips to canoe in the waters (over the course of two years) and then went again with our church youth group.  This is a very special gift, beyond the fact that my son loves to fish – it’s a gift that I know means a lot to my FM.

Middle daughter received a music-themed charm bracelet since she LOVES music!

Eldest daughter received a stone bracelet since she has to pick up a rock everywhere she goes.

I received this beautiful cedar box.  As my FM told the story, back ‘in the day’, if you purchased a hope chest from a certain shop, you received a mini-hope chest as a special gift.  I never had a hope chest so now I finally do!

My husband received two more lectionaries for his lay minister work.  My FM had bought him his first one last year and now he has all three versions, which are rotated during the church years – perfect gift for him!

And then it was our turn to give back to one who has given us so much.  We decided to go (mostly) handmade because my FM has always been a crafts & sewing person.

Our youngest gave Grandma a set of loom potholders.  She and Grandma made cookies when we went to Iowa last summer.

Son-man gave Grandma a bag of pecans she needs to crack open – just what she asked for!  (this was the only non-homemade gift but she specifically wanted this one).

Middle daughter gave Grandma a really cool friendship bracelet she wove from embroidery floss in Grandma’s favorite color of blue!

Our oldest daughter gave Grandma a scarf she crocheted all by herself.  Grandma taught her to crochet a couple of years ago so she wanted to show Grandma that she remembered how to do it.  The scarf is skinny because you don’t need much more than that in Texas.

The final gift was from me – I gave her my beautiful 2012 block of the month quilt “Bittersweet Churning” (free pattern at BOMquilts.com) – she had happy tears and a great big smile when she saw the quilt.  She also put it right on her bed and has looked at the workmanship every day since she got it!

Here’s my FM with all four of our children.  What a great late Christmas for one and all!

Letting the Love Into a Thankful Quilted Heart

Quilt Therapy Posted on November 23, 2012 by TK HarrisonNovember 21, 2012

I and my family have been blessed.  Beyond comprehension, at times.  It is not easy for me to accept such kindness, from family, friends and secret gift-givers.

There are many people to thank for their gifts of quilted love that have been sent our way.  The best way I know to do this is to pay it forward, to others in need.

  • Since quilting is my passion, I first need to thank Linda at AbbiMays.com.  She keeps me supplied with fabric to make my quilted heart quilts.
  • To Alex at Aurifil, who has agreed to keep me in thread for some of my quilt projects at BOMquilts.com.
  • To Meloney Funk, who quilts many of my quilts and gifts others with her quilting expertise.
  • To Kathryn Rister, for her longarm quilting and her faith.
  • To the thousands of Facebook quilting friends who have blessed me with their creativity, their energy and sharing their passion of quilting with me.
  • To my foster mother, who wants to build us a sewing studio to separate my family from my quilting escapades and give us a separate place to share our love over quilting.  She is nearly as obsessed with quilting as I am, and that’s a wonderful thing!
  • To Electric Quilt, who makes my quilt designing life SEW much simpler!
  • And last but certainly not least, to the readers of this Quilt Therapy Blog – you make my blogging SO much more fun!

Thank you quilters.  Thank you.
