Honoring a Military Veteran with a Quilt

Quilt Therapy Posted on June 2, 2014 by TK HarrisonJune 2, 2014

There is the national organization, Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOV), a non-profit group that delivers beautiful quilts to our service men and women.  It is a fabulous non-profit group that is from any quilted hearts.

But, with so many of our service members from the most current conflicts in the past 10 years, there are dwindling numbers of older Veteran’s who have yet to be recognized with a quilt.  I do not see that there are any WWI Veteran’s still alive and the numbers of WWII Veteran’s are now dying off.  The Veteran’s from the Korean and Vietnam wars/conflicts are now mostly senior citizens and, again, there are more deaths each day from those who served during the 1950’s and 1960’s.

And unfortunately, QOV can barely keep up with the most recent returning Veteran’s, either wounded or not.  Which leaves our older Veteran’s perhaps recognized on a local level but rarely on a national level.

Enter in Military Veteran Quilts.  I started this website and hopefully, with the help of volunteers, it will grow legs and race across the United States – to help recognize those older service men and women who have yet to be noticed by the QOV.  Once the concept came to me, I wanted our first quilt to be made for someone local.  Our county’s American Legion was our Girl Scout Service Unit sponsor so naturally (I was a Girl Scout leader here for three years), that was the first place I looked for a recipient.  And then I recalled that the current Commander of our American Legion lived right here in the town that we lived in.  I didn’t have to look any further.  He was my chosen Veteran to receive the first Military Veteran Quilt.

The Commander was in the Vietnam War as a Marine.  I machine appliqued these small round emblems onto the four corners of his quilt.  “Once a Marine, Always a Marine”

This first Military Veteran Quilt‘s fabric was donated by AbbiMays.com, the designing and piecing by myself and the quilting donated by Meloney Funk (herself an Air Force Veteran for 27 years).  To find out more about Military Veteran Quilts, please click on the link and visit our website.  Please remember to honor the older Veteran’s, too, as they deserve it for their service to our country!

Time for Another Quilted Lovie!

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 24, 2014 by TK HarrisonApril 20, 2014

My husband is no longer preaching n’teaching at the church he was an interim lay minister for in south Texas.  But, there were two very special girls who almost always attended and participated in the children’s sermons.  There were other children in attendance who received my Quilted Lovies because my husband baptized them.  But, the two little girls were already baptized when my husband started his ministry with that church…and we wanted to do something special for them as they loved my husband to pieces and gifted him with special items or notes.  Those two little girls had to leave the potluck gathering the church had to thank my husband because they were so upset that he was leaving.  So, once I get this Quilted Lovie finished, he can send the two girls their own Quilted Lovies to help them remember him!

Friday Funday: Easter Egg & Fabric Swag Craft Tutorial

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 18, 2014 by TK HarrisonApril 18, 2014

Since our four children are now all teenagers (yes, feel free to pray for us having to deal with four teenagers in the house!) and I have my own MS health issues, we have decided to downsize our Easter decorations.  I am not going to decorate the house with all of the stuffed bunnies and eggs, I am not going to get the baskets out early and I am not going to stuff plastic eggs anymore.  So, I wanted a quick and easy Easter craft that would brighten up our living room with the pastels of the season.  Introducing my (very simple) Easter Egg & Fabric Swag Craft:

This is the list of supplies you will need:

Easter Egg & Fabric Tutorial

Scrap jelly roll fabrics

Plastic Easter eggs with holes in them.

Heavy thread

Large needle and threader (optional)

Instructions:

1)  Cut your jelly roll scraps in half, ending up with 1 1/4″ strips.
2)  Cut each strip to 10″ in length.

3)  Cut a strip of string to your own specifications.  Tie one end of your string with an over-and-under knot.
4)  Thread your needle with the string.

5)  Fold each 1 1/4″ x 10″ strip in half.

IMG_1368

6)  Sew the very top of the strip loosely with your string, then push it down on the string.

IMG_1374

7)  Continue sewing your strips to the string until you have used up all of your fabric strips and your string is full.
8)  Hang your string of fabric up to make sure you have enough fabric on the strips.

9)  Now it is time to string up your plastic eggs!
10)  Cut enough strings for the number of eggs you have.
11)  Using a needle and the string for your eggs, use your needle to ‘sew’ the eggs to the strings.

12)  Now you are ready to tie your eggs to your fabric swag!

That’s all it takes!  I finished this craft within an hour, so you should be able to do so, too!

Hope you’ve enjoy making this Easter Egg & Fabric craft as much as I did!  It is now an Easter swag that our family can enjoy throughout the rest of Easter!

Flashback Tuesday: “I Believe” Card Holder

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 15, 2014 by TK HarrisonApril 15, 2014

I know, I know…please don’t grouse about me putting up Christmas quilt projects before Easter!  But, for quilters, sometimes we have to start to at least think ahead of things to put on our Christmas to-do lists!

This pattern was designed and published for my BOMquilts.com 2010’s annual “Christmas in July”.  You don’t have to use the same fabrics that were available then, you can just use any fabrics that have a panel with words on it.  It doesn’t even have to be a Christmas wall hanging – you could make it a birthday wall hanging for all of the birthday cards you or someone in your house may amass during their birthdays!

I-Believe-Card-Holder

This is a very quick pattern to make and quilt on any domestic sewing machine that has a quilting foot.  Click Here for the fabric requirements and free pattern!

THIS is What MY Quilting is All About: A Memory Quilt

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 14, 2014 by TK HarrisonApril 14, 2014

You have literally watched me build a very special memory quilt through this blog.  The latest post (and finished quilt image) can be seen here.

DDMLabel

This is the digitized image of the label that was put on the quilt.

And this is a photo of my friend reading the label:

And THIS is exactly why I make such memory quilts.  The happy tears, the stroking of the quilt, the remembrance of what each fabric was used for or when it was purchased…and the absolute pure (and raw) feelings of having that little piece of a quilted memorial of a loved one:
