Flashback Tuesday: MKs Acorns Dressed to the Nines

Quilt Therapy Posted on November 26, 2013 by TK HarrisonNovember 22, 2013

I love these Tuesday flashbacks!  Memories of the quilts as I designed and made them, as well as finishing them off and gifting them to someone (or keeping them myself) – it’s one of the best things about being a quilter!

MKs Acorns Dressed to the Nines was a mystery quilt I designed and made:

And the FREE quilt pattern is still available at BOMquilts.com!

Flashback Tuesday: A BlockCentral.com Mystery Quilt

Quilt Therapy Posted on November 5, 2013 by TK HarrisonNovember 4, 2013

Of all of the quilts I have made over my 30-odd years of quilting, this quilt has garnered the most loveliest comments, especially my choice of fabrics and the way I used the lights, mediums and dark’s so well:

starfallgallery-tammy

I have had a number of folks want to have it, either as a gift or to purchase it from me.  I won’t let them…because there is a very personal story behind my choice of fabrics for this quilt and it means a lot to me.

When I was in my third foster home, my younger (by a year) foster sister was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin’s disease.  She was the youngest natural child of my foster parents.  For nearly a year, she was so very sick…before she succumbed to the disease.  The grief was the hardest on my foster mother (or at least she was the most vocal about her grief) and it made it hard for me to continue to live through that, especially given that I was already without parents at that time in my young life.

On my foster sister’s funeral card, they used the quote:  “God gave us Flowers so we could have Roses in December.”

That is the reason I chose the ‘rose’ fabrics I did and that is the reason I will never willingly give this beautiful quilt away.  That’s my special quilt and it continues to be a reminder of her beautiful spirit and our short but fun times we had together when I was a young teenager.

You can find the free mystery quilt pattern here.

Flashback Tuesday: A Debbie Mumm BOM

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 29, 2013 by TK HarrisonOctober 27, 2013

In 2006, I participated in a Debbie Mumm free block of the month quilt project.  This is one of the blocks from that project:

DMummBlock

Unfortunately, I never completed the quilt and when I went searching for the rest of the pattern, it is no longer active on Debbie’s website.  I will have to search my stash to see if I can find the rest of these blocks as I do not believe I put them in another project…just in a bin that I haven’t located yet!

Quilt Flashback Tuesday: Dandy Doodle Quilt

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 1, 2013 by TK HarrisonSeptember 30, 2013

It is always fun to look back at older photographs on my computer to see what I was quilting at a certain time in my life…in my children’s lives…and in the lives of my extended family.  It’s also a good way for me to document my quilts and recipients – since MS has robbed me of much of my memory.

This Quilt Flashback Tuesday, I’d like to feature a quilt I made for my nephew upon his high school graduation.  At the time, he was committed to serving in the Navy so the obvious choice for me was to make him a red, white and blue quilt.  He never made it to the Navy but he now has the completed quilt.  It’s too small for him to fit on a bed but perhaps he uses it as a lap quilt.

I started making the blocks from a free block of the month quilt offered by Planet Patchwork in 2005 and 2006.  The pattern is no longer free but it is available on their website here.

Here are two of the blocks from his quilt (circa 6/11/2006):

100_0096-2

And this is the finished quilt!
