Egg on Her Face

A couple of weeks ago, while the dad-person and son-man were off on their Webelo camping adventure, the girls and I decided we should have a little fun ourselves and venture into the county seat to have dinner and enjoy a little ice cream treat.

We dined at my favorite Texas BBQ restaurant, and enjoyed a relaxing and delicious meal while giggling and talking.  Somehow, the conversation got around to the things that DD#1 has helped herself to (stolen. borrowed and forgot to return, etc.) from around the house – such as fabric, batting and thread from my sewing room, books from her dad’s collections, games of the other kids’ and the occasional DVD she’ll sneak into her room to watch on a laptop.

As she was trying to defend her actions, I asked her if she knew who the juvenile judge was in town, and she floundered…muttering and fluttering.  I explained that it was Ms. T’s husband (and they know Ms. T. from our local quilt group), and she had met him at a banquet.  Oh yeah, she knew who he was and she knew he was our county judge.

We laughed about it and went on to a dozen different conversations (as young girls are apt to do) and all of a sudden, her face gets read and she starts spewing her soda across the room.

“What in the world is the matter?” I inquired.

“LOOOOK!” she said, pointing out the window.

Is it just me thinking God was showing us His humor once again, or was it just perfect timing for Judge E. and Ms. T to show up for dinner at that moment???

Children’s Sermon – Pay it Forward

Once again, I was tapped to give the children’s sermon at church today, with a continuation of John 6:35.  While I was in San Antonio yesterday for Girl Scout training, I left the loving hubs with a to-do list of making me a dozen small loaves of bread.  Late last night, I wrapped the bread in paper, then stitched together a dozen cloth bags and tied them closed.  On the string, I added a special note (see below).

For the children, I asked them if they knew what “pay it forward” meant.  Then, I went on to explain that it meant you do something nice for someone, and they, in turn, do something nice for someone else.  As an example, I told them how a wonderful lady purchased my books for college when I was younger, with the agreement that someday, I’d do the same … and pay it forward.  And now, we are doing that – paying for our niece’s books for college.

And I wanted them to help me do the same with the loaves of bread.  I asked them to take one (or two) and go out and give them to people in our congregation, and ask THEM to “pay it forward” — give the bread to someone who perhaps doesn’t have a relationship with Christ, and hopefully that will offer them a new way of life, through Him…so they will never be hungry or thirsty again.

I must have done something right, because the number of people who thanked me and patted my back after the service was amazing – though I did explain that the bread wasn’t an original thought (they had a ministry at our church in Utah that did this)!  I think I may have gone from the mom with all the kids to being NOTICED <eek>!  May have to sleek back to the shadows for a while, just to get my back to the wall again 😉

Grand Finale to the Library’s Summer Reading Program

You may remember that our three youngest kids participated in the Medina Community Library’s summer reading program last year, and received medals for their accomplishments.

This year, they also signed up to participate.  But, oh, the grand finale was MUCH better than the ice cream social they attended last year!

On Tuesday, they were treated to a puppet show, lunch and then a magic show.

On Wednesday, they saw a re-enactment of William B. Travis, had lunch and then saw a re-enactment of Charles Goodnight (both Texas heroes).

Yesterday was Lucas Miller, the Singing Zoologist – who had the kids entertained, enthralled and excited about animals!  Then, an early dinner was served (our kids thought it was a snack, since we normally eat dinner much later) and those who participated in the summer reading program were gifted with certificates and tshirts:

Then, we were ushered back into the library for a fabulous performance by the Texas Storybook Theatre of an Amelia Bedelia book – what a HOOT!  Son-man even got invited up to help sort out what the idiom of “watch your tongue” meant (literal vs. non-literal meanings).

The kids said they enjoyed Mr. Miller’s performance much more…but, I could tell from the giggles and guffaws that the adults got their funny bones tickled by the Storybook Theatre performance!

Thank you, Medina Community Library.  What a GREAT thing to do for our kids, encouraging them to read and giving them a bit of a reward for their efforts!

More Weekend Quilt BAG Therapy!

DD#3 and I put together a lovely new bag for my niece’s 21st birthday this weekend:

And after the kids went to bed, I couldn’t stand it … and had to make a bag for myself.  This bag is much more petite, half of the original pattern and perfect for my needs!
