Flashback Tuesday: A BlockCentral.com Mystery Quilt

Quilt Therapy Posted on November 5, 2013 by TK HarrisonNovember 4, 2013

Of all of the quilts I have made over my 30-odd years of quilting, this quilt has garnered the most loveliest comments, especially my choice of fabrics and the way I used the lights, mediums and dark’s so well:

I have had a number of folks want to have it, either as a gift or to purchase it from me.  I won’t let them…because there is a very personal story behind my choice of fabrics for this quilt and it means a lot to me.

When I was in my third foster home, my younger (by a year) foster sister was diagnosed with Stage IV Hodgkin’s disease.  She was the youngest natural child of my foster parents.  For nearly a year, she was so very sick…before she succumbed to the disease.  The grief was the hardest on my foster mother (or at least she was the most vocal about her grief) and it made it hard for me to continue to live through that, especially given that I was already without parents at that time in my young life.

On my foster sister’s funeral card, they used the quote:  “God gave us Flowers so we could have Roses in December.”

That is the reason I chose the ‘rose’ fabrics I did and that is the reason I will never willingly give this beautiful quilt away.  That’s my special quilt and it continues to be a reminder of her beautiful spirit and our short but fun times we had together when I was a young teenager.

You can find the free mystery quilt pattern here.

Mums from Mummy

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 28, 2013 by TK HarrisonOctober 27, 2013

Since homecoming was last week, Friday was the culmination of the fun – it was spirit day so the kids wore their school colors.  Alas, it’s also the day that parents/guardians give their kids mums (or boyfriends give their girlfriend’s mums).  This year, I was under a very strict budget but wanted to once again give my daughter’s special mums.

Youngest daughter wore this year’s and last year’s mum on her pant legs.

Next Daughter wore hers part of the day as she said it got in the way most of the time.

I made a special mum for our daughter, who is an alumni – so her mum is a bit different than the other girls’ mums.

btw – Last year, I gave the son-man a garter for his arm but he refused to wear it…hence I did not get him anything.  But, I did tell him that if he wanted a mum or something else next year, he was to let me know.

It’s a great way for the kids to show their school spirit – and a great time for this Mom to enjoy putting together something special for our daughters!

Homecoming…See You Next Week!

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 25, 2013 by TK HarrisonOctober 21, 2013

This week is homecoming for our small public school.  All four of our kids will be participating, either as a volunteer or taking care of other responsibilities.  This quilt image below was made on 9.25.2010 and was donated to the (now non-existent) band for a trip to a band contest that they took first place in, in Houston!  Don’t get me started on the band issue – I will never stop!

If you need me, you can find me somewhere near the school – helping my kids enjoy their homecoming 2013 (and missing Quilt Market for the first time in seven years)!

Wednesday Bloopers

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 16, 2013 by TK HarrisonOctober 15, 2013

This literally scared me when I woke up from nap one day:

It’s my second daughter’s hair, all twisted up on the back of her head.  I asked her if she had anything living in there, like a bird’s nest or something.  LOL

Quilt Flashback Tuesday: Dandy Doodle Quilt

Quilt Therapy Posted on October 1, 2013 by TK HarrisonSeptember 30, 2013

It is always fun to look back at older photographs on my computer to see what I was quilting at a certain time in my life…in my children’s lives…and in the lives of my extended family.  It’s also a good way for me to document my quilts and recipients – since MS has robbed me of much of my memory.

This Quilt Flashback Tuesday, I’d like to feature a quilt I made for my nephew upon his high school graduation.  At the time, he was committed to serving in the Navy so the obvious choice for me was to make him a red, white and blue quilt.  He never made it to the Navy but he now has the completed quilt.  It’s too small for him to fit on a bed but perhaps he uses it as a lap quilt.

I started making the blocks from a free block of the month quilt offered by Planet Patchwork in 2005 and 2006.  The pattern is no longer free but it is available on their website here.

Here are two of the blocks from his quilt (circa 6/11/2006):

And this is the finished quilt!
