Hubster’s Micro Container Gardening

Quilt Therapy Posted on September 22, 2014 by TK HarrisonSeptember 21, 2014

Sometimes, I just shake my head at some of the ideas my husband has for gardening.  He’s the one with all of the agriculture degrees so he definitely knows what he’s doing – even if I don’t.

Last week, I woke up from nap to find this on the porch:

I had no clue what it was though I was glad he was re-purposing some of my plastic soda bottles.  He explained to me that he planted beans in this batch.  I think green beans but again, I forgot to ask.  LOL

These beans weren’t the only thing he planted – he used different ‘planters’ for other veggies, just to see what would work and what wouldn’t.

This weekend, I went outside to find that he not only had beans already growing, but his yellow crook-neck squash and his zucchini were also sprouting their first leaves:

I guess I’ll wait to see how all of this turns out for him!

Mommie Dearest: No Wire Hangers, Ever!

Quilt Therapy Posted on September 17, 2014 by TK HarrisonSeptember 14, 2014

I am pretty sure a former friend and I watched “Mommie Dearest” at least a half-dozen times when it came out in 1981.  And the wire hangars was the one thing that stuck with me all these years later.  We do have a few wire hangars in our house but for the most part, we use plastic hangars in our house.

Know what else I hate?  Jeffrey Dah*mer 57-gallon drums.  We have two of them at our house and my husband is fully aware that I cannot stand the site of them.  One is currently used to collect rain water and the other is used to keep the chicken feed dry under our deck.  As Lady Macbeth said in Macbeth…”Out, damn’d spot! out, I say!”  UGH – they just need to GO AWAY!!!

A No Quilt Gift 50th Birthday

Quilt Therapy Posted on September 4, 2014 by TK HarrisonSeptember 2, 2014

I turned 50 a couple of weeks ago.  Perhaps I’ll finally be considered wise – by most everyone except my kids.  LOL  I have always preferred a very subtle and low-key birthday.  Not a big party person, more so now than ever before because of my MS blessing.

I rarely ask for much though this year I did have two requests and both of them were gifted to me.  I wanted a Boy Scout Mother’s necklace.  In the world of Boy Scouting, when your child achieves a rank advancement, the mother is also gifted with a pin for their son’s accomplishment.  I have two ribbons, one from our son’s Cub Scout advancements and one from our son’s Boy Scout advancements.  Unfortunately, the ribbons have some pretty thick clasps on the back and they put holes in my shirts.  So, I wanted a Mother’s necklace so I didn’t ruin anymore shirts.  Because I made my request late, my husband ordered it online and it should be in the mail this coming week.

The second gift request was a new wrist tape dispenser.  My youngest daughter used mine and accidentally broke it.  I love those wrist dispensers…even though the tape refills cost a lot more cost than just buying rolls of tape.  But, instead of one tape dispenser, I received two of them!  Now I can keep one in my studio and one in our wrapping paper holder.

And then I received a very unexpected gift – one that I will use often and enjoy:

My MIL gifted me with a chair for our deck and a cushion to go with it!  I enjoy sitting outside, watching the kids or the chickens or the dogs or even just the sunsets.  Something I would have never bought for myself but it certainly was needed and appreciated!

I felt really bad for my kids because I had a couple of very bad MS days, to the point that I couldn’t walk without assistance.  And one of those days was my birthday.

There were gifts of money and gifts of cards, too.  But, I must say…having my family together for my half-century mark was the best part of having a birthday.  Well, the brownies were right up there, too!

The Original Bag Lady

Quilt Therapy Posted on September 3, 2014 by TK HarrisonSeptember 2, 2014

My family.  They are a bad influence on me.  Okay, perhaps that’s stretching the truth just a bit.  For as far back as I can remember, I have collected and saved bags.  It started out just being grocery bags and I am now the go-to person in our family for bags for almost any type of occasion.  I still collect paper grocery bags – they sure come in handy in my sewing room, to ship a package, etc.  I have one of those holders for the plastic shopping bags you get at the grocery store and we use them mostly to put filling in boxes we may need to mail.  Then, when I started going to Quilt Market, I had to collect the bags they gave out there, too! Those make great gifts for our kids or quilting pals.  And then have been the recipient of lovely and special homemade tote bags, too.  Plus, I now have a growing collection of fabric grocery bags…though we forget to take them in the store with us more than not.

I also have quite a collection of gift bags:

And less we forget…the tissue paper, easily ironed to get the wrinkles out of, to go in the aforementioned gift bags – and the lone ribbon that we pass around from one kid to the next as it is special to our family:

These Hills are Alive…with the Smell of Herbs!

Quilt Therapy Posted on August 25, 2014 by TK HarrisonAugust 25, 2014

My husband planted some beautiful herbs last year.  They are beautiful because they are annuals and as long as we water them, don’t let them go to seed and the Texas heat doesn’t kill them…they will come back year after year.  LOVE me that kind of gardening!  Not to mention that we can either freeze some of them (basil frozen, check) or dry some of them in the food dehydrator.  So I can have fresh, home-grown, organic herbs whenever I cook…or hubby cooks.

Here’s some of my beautiful herbs:

Basil

A word of warning…do NOT plant chives if you have free range turkeys.  Within the first month of having planted chives, the two Tom turkeys we have ate the chives down to the roots!  Really chapped my khaki’s because that was one of the few items I would have cooked with most often!
