A Little Quilt Therapy this Past Weekend
Our children’s Sunday School director handed me these squares that were artistically designed by the children in our church’s daycare, and asked if I could figure out a way to put them together into a wall hanging for a local community center. Being the creative nut that I am, I have to envision my designs before I can actually begin working on them.
A little about the squares – I have no earthly idea where they came from. Each one has a little loop on each corner, and on the opposite corner they have a button on the back. I’m guessing they’re specifically made to button together, so they become a single something. They appear to be made from a linen, like a nice cloth napkin or tablecloth. The challenge for me wasn’t just the buttons (which would certainly break my needle, were I not careful) … but, also that the squares weren’t SQUARE! 🙁
I finally decided my best course of action was to buy pre-quilted fabric, and sew the squares as a buttoned unit to the pre-quilted fabric. Ideally, if it were a project that I had created, I would have removed the loops and the buttons – but, I didn’t want to ruin the integrity of what these children had done, so I left them alone.
Instead, I just sewed each square to the prequilted fabric in a cross pattern – all the way down the rows and all the way across the rows….then I stitched a seam all the way around the entire set of blocks to hold them in place. Then, I turned the edges of the fabric on three sides and added a rod-pocket to the top – showing off the back of the pre-quilted fabric, to give it a little zing.
I sure hope she likes it!
