Since I have dubbed my 2015 year to be my year of JOY, I’d like to offer some very special joy to you!
In case you haven’t followed my blog for very long, I am a brand snob when it comes to thread. An Aurifil brand snob. I have tried many, many different brands of thread over the years and have had many problems with them. It was love at first stitch when I used my first spool of Aurifil thread. It didn’t leave much dust residue in my machine, it didn’t break during sewing, it is 100% Mako cotton so I am not allergic to it and the big spools last a long, long time. All of those are important to me but the last one is especially important because we live 45 minutes from the nearest quilt shop that carries Aurifil thread. There is nothing like being in the middle of a project, in the middle of the night and in the middle of nowhere…and running out of thread. I can easily see the amount of thread remaining on a spool and add it to my shopping list the next time we go to town – BEFORE I run out of thread!
NOW, THE GIVEAWAY! Aurifil* has sent me this amazing collection of Pat Sloan’s “Eat Your Fruits n’Veggies” thread collection.
Pat Sloan has collaborated with Aurifil to design a thread collection to inspire quilters with her vision of color. Available in specially chosen weights to support the style of the designer. Designer collections are suitable for any project.
This collection includes 12 large spools of Aurifil 50 wt., 100% Mako cotton threads

(*Aurifil has gifted this thread collection to me as a giveaway. I did not earn nor take any compensation for this giveaway. I really am an Aurifil thread brand snob.)
I just have to laugh when someone comes to see me and wants to see what quilts I have made or projects I have completed…and as they look around, they see other things that make them ask me why I have such an item in my sewing room. It’s time to come clean! These are some not-so-normal items that I found in my sewing room that an outsider may have no clue about.
This is a Pampered Chef® Pastry Plastic Scraper. I just looked on their website and do not see it listed, so they may not make them anymore. This is one handy tool, though! I use it when I’m trimming blocks or fabric to scrape my cutting board of the tiny pieces left behind.
This is a pasta fork used in most kitchens who make pasta. One of my dear friends showed me how wonderful of a back scratcher it is so I keep it in my cup of necessary sewing gadgets in case I have an itch that I need scratching.
Most quilters know what the bottom tool is, it’s a classic crystal point turner. But, if I have something bigger that I need to turn right-side out, my husband made me this stick – which works perfectly to at least get my project turned and then I use the point turner for getting my corners pushed out.
Clothes pins are a must-have around my sewing room. You can see one here, holding up some of the templates that I use quite often.
What’s in YOUR sewing room that is unconventional but serves a great purpose to you?
Although I could have hundreds of quilting accessories filling up my sewing room, I find that the most basic ones are all that I need. There is no race, that I know of, to see who has the most gadgets and accessories…it’s just me and my sewing room with fabric, pins, an iron and my sewing machine. Most of the other STUFF that quilt shops sell is just that – STUFF. I already have a one-butt sewing room, so why fill it up with anything more than the basic accessories and then lots of fabric? 🙂
Bobbin holders are one of the necessities I need in my sewing room. When starting a quilt, I take the thread that I have chosen to use for the quilt and fill two or three bobbins (depending on the size of the quilt project) full of that thread – the extras go into one of the bobbin keepers below…and it saves me tons of time when I run out of thread in one bobbin and can just pop a filled bobbin into my sewing machine.
And when I speak of filling up my sewing room with fabric, I couldn’t resist purchasing another roll-up of Kona solids. hmmm, that’s some yummy solid fabrics, for sure! And if you read this blog regularly, you can see that I still haven’t unrolled the previous Kona roll-up that I purchased in November 2013!
Unfortunately for Kona, I may be forced to stop purchasing their fabrics and talking about them in my social media. I have asked them to sponsor a few things and they refuse to respond to me. That’s not playing nice…and I want to play nice with my quilting products!
