“The Song of Bernadette”

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 13, 2011 by TK HarrisonApril 13, 2011

DD#1 performed in their school’s one act play (OAP) these past few months.  Their play advanced at Zone but did not advance at Districts.  Last year, the school’s OAP cast won state, so it was a bit disappointing to the cast and crew that they did not advance.  To this mom, it had more to do with the subject matter (religious – and in our Bible Belt part of the south, Catholic to boot!) of the play more than the performance.  Sad but true – have to be careful with what message you allow the children to ACT out in a public school setting!  The ironic thing about this is that two of the cast members are children of a local Methodist pastor, and HE had no problem with his daughter’s wearing habits and ACTING as nuns.

(Can you tell the subject matter irritates me a touch?!)

Anyway, our daughter played two parts in the play, and we thought she did a great job.  The first was a school girl, giddy and girlie.  The second was a domineering aunt – quite fitting for a firstborn daughter!  She did a fabulous job with both of her parts and we are very proud of her.

She also cut out and painted the “mock rocks” on the set, and I think she enjoyed that as much as she enjoying acting in the play!

She really liked this costume, too – said it made her look like she had a hiney since genetics didn’t!  🙂

A Bag in Hand…

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 12, 2011 by TK HarrisonApril 12, 2011

Last weekend, the ladies of our church held a Texas convention.  As part of it, they made bags to fill with information and printed resources for all of the attendees.  The youth were also asked to assist with the clean-up from the luncheon, and funds would be given to the youth group for their mission trip this summer (or for my middle daughter’s camp tuition, since she’s in youth but not in high school and not old enough to go on the trip).

The convention was about a week away and the organizers were in a tizzy – more and more registrations kept coming in and they were unable to meet the demand with the bags – so they called in the Big Bag Dog:  ME. 🙂

First they asked me to finish 10 bags they had already cut out.

Then they asked me to make 20 more bags as more registrations arrived.

Finally, two days before the convention, they asked for five more – just in case women came in and registered the day of the event.

Luckily, I have a family who tolerates – and occasionally enjoys – helping me with projects.  One daughter sewed, two daughters ironed fabric and my husband even got involved by turning and pressing the bags to finish them.  We met their demands head-on and when I took the girls to help the youth clean up, it gave me a smile to see that many of the ladies from our own church made sure to get the bags that I made <grin>.
