Studio Move Planning In Progress – Help Wanted!

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 25, 2013 by TK HarrisonApril 24, 2013

As I’ve mentioned before, my lovely foster mother gave me a quilt studio as a special gift.  Unfortunately, we did not get the studio completed while she was here – but, she made financial arrangements with a local big box store for the materials we will need to finish out the inside.  After she left us for her home (and colder climates), we were able to move her roll-away bed out of my current sewing room in our house and I got my sewing room back.

And that was when I noticed what a MESS my fabric and scraps were in!

These are my Jelly Roll scraps – or scraps of fabric from binding other quilts at (mostly) 2 1/2″  widths

IMG_9769 (450x299)

These are my fabric scraps – although there are a LOT of fat quarters mixed in.

These are my very special fat quarter bundles specific to the Texas Hill Country fabrics, as well as batik Jelly Rolls and some charm square scraps thrown in.

These are my current project fabrics, as well as a couple of quilts I need to send off.

And finally, these are my finished quilt tops (either unquilted or quilted) as well as blocks for my “Pendleton Inspired” BOM from BOMquilts.com.

All I can do is shake my head at this MESS I’ve created.  And it certainly doesn’t stop with these photos.  Under my sewing table and under my cutting table are boxes that have quilt fabric and completed blocks in them.

OY.

So, I ask for your help – what is the best way you have found to organize your stash and quilted projects?  Please comment, I truly need guidance so my new studio is organized when I move into it!

I’ve Done it Again!

Quilt Therapy Posted on April 14, 2010 by TK HarrisonApril 14, 2010

Can’t figure out what I got myself into this time, but the blisters won’t stop popping up and the itching is terribly distracting:

I cannot have this!  I need to finish some quilts this coming weekend!  Darn.  Ouch.

No Pain No Gain – Stupid Tammy Trick that Leads to Beautiful, Organized Shelf

Quilt Therapy Posted on January 10, 2009 by TK HarrisonJanuary 10, 2009

For those of you who read my eNewsletter, this is going to be a repeat of that post – but, with photos!

I did a “Stupid Tammy Trick” today, and can only laugh about it (else I’ll cry myself to sleep).  My lovely husband bought me a grand shelf for my sewing room for Christmas; its five shelves are 18″ deep and the entire shelving unit stands 72″ tall. WOW, I need that!  My husband was being the driver and helping a pastor and his wife with some medical tests this morning, so I decided that I would clear out the space in my sewing room where the shelf needed to go.  After I cleared up the area, I decided I was capable of putting the shelf together — with the help of my daughters.

Well, I was leaning down, trying to make sure the first shelf was level, when I lost my balance.  I started to fall and stood up, grabbing my oldest daughter’s hand.  She, in turn, could tell that she couldn’t save me (and didn’t want to go down with me) so she LET GO!  It was almost as if the world were turning in slow motion, as I began my backward’s descent to the ground.  I landed on a couple of shelves (and have a backside bruise to prove it) and like a nut, I tried to catch myself with my right hand.

This is one of those “don’t try this at home” incidents, because I heard something in my arm POP and then I was on the floor, girls screaming and me afraid to move because I had shelves under me and a very sore arm!  Luckily, after a few minutes there and a few on my bed with the fan on me, I was able to function.  After giving all of us time to calm down, I went in and we tackled that shelf again – and we did it!  We got it all put together, moved into my sewing room and then anchored to the wall.  I called my doctor-friend and we decided I probably just pulled some tendons and she told me not to pick anything up for a few days.  Otherwise, I don’t think I broke anything.  My arm and tailbone sure are sore – but, hey!  I have a beautiful new shelving unit in my sewing room that was worth the troubles!

Now, let’s compare this to the day I set my sewing room up nearly two years ago:

I sure do have a lot more STUFF – but, at least it’s organized!  And my arm is better, just a bit sore when I pick up something or turn it the wrong way.  I’m having lunch with my doctor-friend today, and she’ll palpate it and see if I need to do anything more.

Another Stupid Tammy Trick

Quilt Therapy Posted on September 24, 2008 by TK HarrisonSeptember 24, 2008

I can’t believe Letterman hasn’t called me yet.  Really.  I’m just so much fun around the house!

Saturday night, as I enjoyed putting together quilt blocks, I did it.

Yep, another Stupid Tammy Trick.

You may remember that my husband put together the perfect cutting table for me?

See it there in front of the window?  It’s 36″ tall, just right for my height.  It’s an inexpensive 4′ x 8′ folding table we purchased at the men’s toy store (you *know* which orange store I mean), and he added a wonderful piece of 1/2″ plywood to it, and then we secured my cutting mat to that.

It’s PERFECT!

Except when it’s not.

Which would be when I bent down to pick up a scrap of fabric that fell on the floor Saturday night….whacking my head and scraping it as I bent all the way to the floor.

Oh yeah, another Stupid Tammy Trick.  Right on my upper forehead.  Ouch!

Letterman?  Circus?  I dunno – but, I obviously live by that motto “no pain no gain”!!!

And the Winner of the Stupid Tammy Tricks Is …. Tammy!

Quilt Therapy Posted on May 27, 2008 by TK HarrisonMay 28, 2008

We have a beautiful, huge 36′ x 12′ deck on the back of our house — built with our own loving hands, on Memorial Day 2008:

And a few flower pots with pretty plants, waiting to grow and share their beauty:

And this morning, I woke up to this:

And this …

And this …

I totally forgot that the treated lumber had formaldehyde in it – one of the three major things that I’m allergic to.  Oh hell.  And my new derm won’t be back in town until tomorrow.

These hands are on so much fire that when I drop them into a bowl of ice, the ice literally sizzles.

Ow.  Double Ow.
